Legendary Chicago DJ/producer Green Velvet is known for his sharp, punchy house-laced techno beats. And so is his “Bassick” EP partner Detlef. Just hark back to old school electronic music where American dance anthems like “Percolater” and “Flash” by Green Velvet ruled. Now fast forward to the house-infused disco bravado of the 2017 single “Swagon” by Greek producer Detlef to witness that same tradition. The two certainly complement each other with their attention-grabbing musical styles.
On EP opener “Alright”, we’re presented with fiercely intoxicating house grooves that shuffle along and then climax to melodic techno sounds perfect for peak-hour dance floor action. Although possessing a retro feel, the track certainly fits within the progressive house music realm of today. “Issues” goes into deep and dark tribal terrain with its sinister vibe and enticing techno funk topped off with sassy, reading-you-your-rights lyrics to boot like “..it’s not me...it’s you...and I don’t want to waste my time and energy anymore...you’ve got issues.” Green Velvet and Detlef take us back to classic Chicago house territory by flaunting thumping bass lines and rich rhythms on the “Jack Da Beat” club banger.
“Bassick” is certainly a nice treat for house heads and EDM enthusiasts. Green Velvet and Detlef showcase how sometimes two opposing genres like house and techno can live together harmoniously. And that is indeed a wonderful thing.
