Greek Life Isn't This Awful Thing

There are so many aspects to it that most people would never expect.

Whether you are someone who has generations of people in your family who have participated in Greek life or are the person who knows nothing to very little about it, I think that all of you could really gain a lot from rushing and or joining in on Greek life.

I know that recently Greek life has gotten a really bad reputation and has had some really awful stereotypes surrounding it resulting in some parents really disapproving of their children and or anyone in their family participating in such a thing. However, I am here to tell you that there is so much to it that you don't understand at first glance or see in the media.

For those of you that were wondering, I am in fact one of those people who has had a million people in my family involved in Greek life. This might make me a little biased, but I also never saw myself enjoying being in a sorority or even rushing in spite of that. I, like most people, just thought it was about all these really pretty girls who slept around and partied all the time; or that is the stereotype that surrounds sorority life right now and I knew that was not for me.

But from hearing all about the wonderful times and sincere friendships my family members have made, I decided to ignore what I was thinking and just give it a shot, what did I have to lose?

The answer to that question is absolutely nothing, there are only things to gain. I just assumed that Greek life was not for me but I still went for it so I would not have any regrets later on in life thinking what did I miss out on or a lifetime of sisterhood/brotherhood. I know that sounds cheesy and I never thought I would be saying that, but for me, my sorority has brought so much into my life that I would never have had for me not being in one and yes, one of those things is a lifetime of sisterhood.

For example, my sorority has brought me one of the most loving and caring bigs I know, a group of amazingly intelligent women who want to make a difference in the world and belonging to something bigger than just me or a club I really didn't feel passionate about.

There are so many more things that I could list off and go on and on about, but I am sure some of you or most of you have heard it all before. Some of you may have believed it from the start and some of you may have been more hesitant like I was, but in spite of which every person you may be or however you feel about Greek life, I urge you to give it a shot.

You do not want to look back at your college experience and wonder, “what if?”. If you choose to rush, you have nothing to lose, so why not try it and gain something?

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
