Banning Greek Life Is Not The Solution

In defense of Greek life, we should not be quick to just shut it down.

Recently, there has been a lot of noise in the world of Greek life. The number of incidents connected to the Greek system, especially Fraternities, is beyond ridiculous. These incidents have lead to backlash against Greek life to the point that some universities have banned Greek life altogether.

The question that I have been asking myself in the aftermath of the bans at Florida State and Texas State is, "should it be banned?"

Seriously, given what has happened recently at several different colleges and universities, is a Greek ban the answer?

I honestly do not believe so.

To provide some context, I am a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity at Texas Tech. I pledged and became a Founding Father in the Fall of 2015. I was initiated the day before my 18th birthday, which means I was literally a Beta before I was legally a man.

My point is that I have been a member of a fraternity for a long, critical portion of my life, and I feel as though I am a better man because of it. I have made some of my best friends in college through my fraternity, and I have learned a lot about myself through being a member. Being a member of a fraternity has given me the opportunity to meet and get to know people from across the country because we wear the same letters as actives or alumni.

Clearly, the system is not perfect because people are dying as the result of the actions of some fraternities and their members. I am not going to lie and say that I have the perfect solution to the problem because I know for a fact that I don't have the answers. I do know, however, that not every fraternity has been responsible for someone dying, for someone being assaulted, for someone getting alcohol poisoning, for someone overdosing, for someone being drugged, or for someone being raped.

Ending Greek life may seem like an easy fix to the problems that exist in relation to the behavior of some members of Greek life, but look at the current situation Hollywood is in for a view as to another way. All these Hollywood executives being accused of rape and sexual harassment are being named and losing their jobs and positions. Hollywood is not shutting done entire studios and banning their work from Hollywood.

Some of you probably read that last paragraph and thought, "Hollywood is not the same thing as Greek life," but the similarities are slightly unsettling. Almost exclusively male groups, dominated by wealthy white males, and contain a history of misbehavior. That description works for both, and statistics back that up.

Since Hollywood is not shutting down anytime soon, the expectation that Greeks should seems a bit extreme. Greek life, arguably, does more for society as a whole than Hollywood. Almost all Greek organizations participate in philanthropic and community service activities, while also helping produce great men and women that contribute to society later on in life.

Greek life has it's faults, but it helps produce great men and women of the future. I understand that something about Greek culture needs to change because of the events that have happened at Penn State, Florida State, and others, but ending Greek activities does not solve the problem. Ending Greek life generates resentment among members of fraternities and soroities, so we need an answer that everyone can be happy with, not just anti-Greek life people.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
