I get that it’s only been a few weeks into 2018, but "The Greatest Showman" could quite easily be my favorite movie to come out for this entire year. I hadn’t heard anything about it during the stress of finals week, but as soon as I got home, my mom, knowing of my love for musical theatre, insisted that we needed to go see it. We did, and oh my god I’m still in love.
"The Greatest Showman" follows the life story of P.T. Barnum (Hugh Jackman) and the creation of the Barnum and Bailey Circus.
The movie opens with possibly one of the best opening numbers I’ve ever seen. "The Greatest Show" opens with a shadowy shot of Barnum and an incredible beat and goes on with the first half of my absolute favorite song in the entire movie.
In addition to great music, the cast is phenomenal. Hugh Jackman, of course, takes the ringleader’s role of P.T. Barnum. Zac Efron plays Phillip Carlyle, a rich producer in the area that joins Barnum in the production of his circus. Zendaya plays Carlyle’s enchanting love interest, trapeze artist Anne Wheeler. I was worried about such big-name actors being able to pull off the vocals and musical abilities necessary for a movie like this, but I was blown away. Their voices were all incredible and the choreography was amazing. I have literally never seen anything with better choreography than this. “This Is Me” even won a Golden Globe for Best Original Song.
If you’re looking for a movie to see this weekend, go see "The Greatest Showman" while it’s still in theaters. I was ready to cry the entire movie, not even because it was entirely sad, but because I was so in awe of the breathtaking storytelling and music presented in this movie. I will definitely be purchasing the DVD and I will definitely be watching this movie a million times.
