The new Hugh Jackman movie, "The Greatest Showman," has everyone abuzz. Those of my friends who have seen it are converted into huge fans, listening to the soundtrack over and over and talking about the movie every chance they get. So naturally, I went to see it too. It had to be good right?
I wanted to share a few reasons this movie isn't all it's cracked up to be — it's more.
First of all, it is not a good movie. It's a great movie. Every part of this movie leaves you wanting more. While it isn't the most innovative story ever written, it is performed so beautifully and written so eloquently that it seems like it is brand new. It leaves audiences coming back for more!
The music was absolutely moving, as well as being catchy and modern! The movie is set in a time period over a hundred years ago, but the music sounds like something from Today's Top 40, or like something you'd hear on the soundtrack of from a modern musical, like Hamilton.
The messages portrayed in this movie are also fantastic. During the musical number, "This Is Me," I found tears rolling down my cheeks just from how incredible the actors are at getting the real message of this movie across. The message of this song — and one that permeates the entire movie — is to be strong and steadfast in who you are and to always be yourself, even if others don't want to accept you. You should stick with those who understand you, and who love you for just being you. This is such an important message in our world today, considering all the racism, violence, and poverty that is running rampant in our society. We must learn to accept people regardless of shape, size, color, race, religion, or financial standing, and this movie encourages that acceptance.
Another key message in this movie is about perseverance. Even in the face of losing everything, P.T. Barnum is not discouraged. He keeps on moving forward, solving his own problems and looking to friends, family, and sometimes even strangers for help when he needs it. He does not give up and he is not afraid of a little failure. This perseverance is admirable, especially because many people today are not able to stick out the rough patches on the journey to achieving their dreams.
Something else incredible about this movie is the fact that it appeals to all sorts of people. Obviously, it is appealing to those in the arts, such as theatre and dance, simply based on the performances and the storyline itself. However, it also appeals to business people, as P.T. Barnum truly has a knack for business. The cinematography is exquisite, and it interests movie connoisseurs and directors alike. The childlike love of performance is contagious to people of all ages.
If you haven't seen this movie yet, I highly recommend it. It is truly wonderful for so many reasons. After listening to the soundtrack a few bazillion more times (like I'm doing right now!), I will definitely be going back for another viewing!
