The Greater Things In Life

Take a step back.

The Greater Things In Life
Jaynie Mitchell

This is the season of stress. With the fall semester came football games and one too many corndogs. With spring semester comes nights too cold for shorts and (hopefully) a few road trips. As the fourth week of school comes and goes, so do the beginnings of our exams. First exams might be my least favorite thing in the entire universe. Not knowing what the test will entail or how the questions will challenge me brings on a nervousness that nothing else can.

Taking all of this into consideration, I figured we all needed a reminder of the greater things in life.

Sunsets.

ZoomTan text messages.

Only a dollar for a major boost of confidence? Yes please!

Laying in a field of grass.

This is by far my favorite thing to do. Sometimes, the day is just too gorgeous and riding with windows down does not suffice. BUT, taking a blanket, your speaker, and maybe a nice cold Dr. Pepper and laying in a huge green field for a minimum of 30 minutes...now that sounds like a perfect scenario.

John Mellencamp.

Jack and Diane. Hurts So Good. Small Town. Feeling sad? Throw these babies on.

Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup

She's...stunning.

Country music.

Hands down the best tunes on the radio. Don't fight me on this one.

Fresh flowers.

Studies show that seeing fresh flowers in your room help boost your overall attitude towards the day.

Hearing the Warchant.

Growing up, every game day I was awoken by my parents blasting the war chant through our house. The sweet sound of the band will never grow old.

Making people laugh.

Happiness is contagious!

A fully charged phone.

Waking up and realizing that you forgot to charge your phone really can put a damper on the beginning of the day. 100% charge is very satisfying.

Amazon Prime.

I am convinced that Amazon will rule the world one day. They keep pumping ideas out.

Candles.

She smells exactly like a Volcano Candle. You're welcome.

Crawling into a made-up bed/fresh sheets.

Ever since I can remember, the number one rule in my house was to make your bed before you leave. While it seemed tedious at times, I am thankful that it is now a habit. Something that takes less than a minute can leave you feeling refreshed before dozing off.

Venmo cashout.

It may be nice to have $10 in your Venmo account, but it is much nicer to wake up richer than you thought you were.

A full tank of gas

More often than not, my gas gauge looks kind of pitiful. A full tank of gas can evoke one of the more empowering feelings. In high school, I always said "give me a $20 bill and a full tank and I can conquer anything."

And many many more!! Although it is easy to get overwhelmed during this intense school time, take a second and think about all of the wonderful things around you.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
