Best Books to Read in French

For expanding your French

12

As a lifelong lover of French history and culture, I thought it would be helpful for me to compile a list of the best books I have read in the original French. Now obviously the Francophone world extends far outside the regions of France to the Americas, Africa, and throughout Europe. This list will be focusing on France itself as it is the country I have lived abroad in and am the most familiar with. If you have any books from Haiti, Quebec, Switzerland, Senegal or other Francophone parts of the world please send me their names and I'd love to read them!

Les Misérables

Ahhh that lovely thick book they based a musical off of! We all have enjoyed singing "One Day More" or "On My Own" around the streets. Now the book may seem intimidating but it is worth it. I will forgive you if you skip the Waterloo ramble, but the story itself is not to be missed. Les Misérables is full of trials, redemption, grace and bitterness. This book captures both the suffering of the people and the glory of justice. The characters are richly developed and read as people we can easily identify in our every day lives. I highly recommend reading this in the original French!

Notre Dame De Paris

Before singing "Out There" or "Hellfire" wouldn't you want to read the masterpiece those songs came from? Disney's Hunchback of Notre Dame is a beautiful animation, and the book is even more powerful. I love both of these stories on their own accounts, and Hugo's Notre Dame de Paris is as magnificent as the cathedral itself!

Candide

Voltaire's satire and humor about every day life and people are best captured in the original French!

Moliere

Moliere's plays and stories are not only comical, they speak at great lengths as to our society and its flaws. I strongly recommend these also for French humor.

The Social Contract

Rousseau's works are truly timeless! From the Social Contract to Political Economy, Rousseau poses wonderful solutions to problems that the world still faces today. His quotes can easily be uttered at your local hipster coffeehouse as well. Much of Rousseau is best read in the original French.

Spirit of Laws

Perplexed at the lack of checks and balances in governments today? Montesquieu has somethings to say to you my friends! His works not only have wit and style, they touch on important hot topics of culture and government, as well as usurpation of power!

His works are also very easy to read (as is Rousseau!)

A Cinq Heures Nous Serons Tous Morts

For anybody interested in Les Miserables- this action packed pamphlet is the true account of the June Rebellion. It is short and full of action in every page. It was written by Charles Jeanne, one of the leaders of the June Rebellion, whom in the midst of great adversity stood his ground for liberty.

Trust me- you will enjoy every word.

Count of Monte Cristo

Dumas is a wonderful author! and this is an honorary mention to another amazing Francophone classic :)

Now of course, no list would be complete without me saying if there is a special period of French history or culture that is interesting to you- read the sources in the primary French! I have read French Revolutionaries and their pamphlets in the original French, and it was helpful to see them without the bias of an 1790s English translator. If you are interested in the Middle Ages, pick up some French Medieval texts. The French Resistance? pick up first hand accounts in French!

I have merely captured what I have found to be the most helpful for understanding French culture and our world today. This list has the highlights and is incomplete but forever growing.

I hope you enjoy these books my dear reader, and I will see you next time!

This Survey Shows How Quarantine And Drinking Relate, And I Can't Say I'm Surprised

"5 o'clock somewhere" is more of a guideline now than ever.

As it stands, and my friends and I are finally 21. We're extremely excited to be able to go out to bars and "get lit" as the kids say, but due to the pandemic, all of our plans have been put on hold. We'd rather wait and go when it's safe than risk spreading the infection and hurting our loved ones. So, we've all been quarantining apart, getting on the occasional wine zoom call. This made me wonder if anyone else our age were doing the same thing.

Then, I discovered this survey: We Surveyed Millennials And Gen Z About Their Quarantine Drinking Habits — Cheers. Here are 3 things that I discovered through the survey results.

17 Things To Make You Feel GOOD This Week

Because some purchases are just necessary.

Y'all, we're struggling. You don't even have to tell me, I know. What a mess we're all in, right? This year is not going how we planned and the world has turned into one giant struggle bus. I guess you could be super philosophical about everything happening for a reason, but sometimes life is just hard.

There are plenty of ways to bring yourself out of whatever rut you're in. You could go for a run, have a snack, or read a book. Or, if you're really looking for an adrenaline rush, go shopping. This is obviously not going to solve the world's problems with one swift click of the "checkout" button, but hey, it may just give you the little boost you need today.

- Blissfully unaware that butt-care beyond squats was even something I should be considering in my self-care routine, I tried one of Bawdy Beauty's butt masks for the first time a month ago.

- I've never really given my butt a second though till I took a look at improvements that could be made with the mask — if one of the hydrating, firming, detoxifying, or brightening masks in the kit I received could either smooth out cellulite or tone my skin a bit more, I wasn't going to complain.

- Each Bawdy Beauty sheet mask comes in an individually-packaged sheet, soaked with a serum I massaged into my skin after removing said sheet. The clay butt mask comes in a convenient stick format I simply draw on to my skin and leave to set for about 10 minutes before hopping into the shower.

- I set a goal of committing myself to butt-care every day for one month. Between the regular use of sheet masks, clay masks, and their CBD Butt Balm in between, I didn't have many expectations.

- I thought the whole concept may just be a gimmick, but my butt has never looked so toned in my life, and the cellulite I had is almost completely gone. I wear one every single day when I get the chance.

I'm incredibly skeptical when it comes to marketing ploys and gimmicks in the beauty world. I'll be the first cynic to try out the latest serum on the market every influencer is raving about just to negate every grandiose claim it makes.

Friends, you don't have to be quarantined to use a personal massager, you know? Because, sure, quarantine made for a lot of extra quality time with yourself, but no matter what phase of the reopening process you're in, it's normal and actually healthy to take care of your sexual needs on your own.

5 Books I Didn't Realize Are About Gay Women

If you read primarily LGBTQ fiction, then this list might help to expand your TBR list.

Frequent readers of LGBTQ fiction might feel like they're reading the same book over and over again, with few exceptions.

Most of these books were on my TBR list for months and I didn't realize they were about gay women until I was reading them, hopefully, this list of books can interest you in expanding your reading material and seeking out different stories.

Feel A Lil' Better: Because Those Hormones Aren't Gonna Balance Themselves

Your weekly wellness boost from Odyssey.

No matter how good (or bad) you'd describe your health, one thing is for sure: a little boost is ALWAYS a good idea. Whether that's reading a new, motivating book, or listening to a song that speaks to your soul, there are plenty of resources to help your health thrive on any given day.

It's common knowledge that your hormones impact practically every aspect of your body. Weight gain, acne, mental health... it's all related to your hormonal health. If your life is treating your body like the superstar it is, your endocrine glands should produce the perfect amount of each hormone to keep you running like a well-oiled machine. This is a nice thought, sure. In our current society, even the most balanced person you know may be missing an important aspect of respecting their body. Things like sleep, stress, diet, exercise, and a busy pace of life can throw hormones off balance and negatively impact your general wellbeing. Sometimes these imbalances are noticed right away, while other times they can be smaller — annoying, but not as obvious.

One of the biggest discomforts I initially had with the stay-at-home order was feeling trapped and isolated from what was going on outside the walls of my house. Add that to living in a massive city, where social distancing is nearly impossible when doing something as simple as walking down the street.
