Coming to Judson I was unsure if I wanted to pursue a major in music or art. Music was my passion, but I also enjoyed art as well. Its took a little while, but eventually I decided to go with graphic design. Once I began my classes I gained a sense of pride within my major. I liked that the work I was doing was challenging, and it made it feel that much more legitimate. I loved that I was starting to become a professional in a craft and I felt good about all of it. As time rolled on and I began my final project for first semester I started to check out graphic designers who were influential in the world of punk. I took a liking towards Graphic designer Jamie Reid, who did a-lot of work for the sex pistols.
His work along with the work of Jerry Dammers, also a musician, really opened my mind to the possibilities of combining the two. The more I researched, the more I saw my story in these designers. They were all fresh out of art school, and played as musicians as well.
Soon I became obsessed with graphic design, and I couldn't wait to start my own portfolio to send to bands over the summer and gain some ground on the music scene, as well as the graphic design scene.
I may not have reached the level of Jerry Dammers and Jamie Reid just yet, but I'm getting there and I've found inspiration in the realization that graphic design can become a part of my music ambitions.
