I was one of those college kids who lived at home to try and save enough money before being slung into the world of student loan debt.
That being said, I never got what those movies call the "true collegiate experience." Sure, I went out with friends and did stuff when I wasn't drowning in schoolwork, but I never lived in the dorms (save for orientation) and I never knew what it was like to share my space with someone else (save for the Disney College Program). During last spring break, I attended USITT, which, for those who are not technical theatre savvy, is an annual conference that caters to the world of what goes on behind the scenes. It's like tech theatre Disney World.
Anyway, I interviewed for The Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, whose home is on a college campus. Long story short, I ended up getting the position of Production Management Intern and thus began my move to New Jersey and into the entirely new adventure of staying on a college campus for a few months.
Now, I'm familiar with the set up of FGCU's dorms. You have your own personal bedroom and then you share a bathroom with your roommates. The dorms on the campus I'm staying at are worlds different. You share a room with one other person and then the entire floor shares a bathroom. There are three shower stalls and three bathroom stalls. There's a community kitchen and laundry facility in the basement, as well as a shared kitchenette on the same floor as the rooms.
It's quite an adventure. Thankfully, I have a pretty amazing roommate and some great floor mates that make this experience what it is. I've gone from not knowing what living on campus is like to being thrust in the college experience. It's weird having already graduated and just now being able to experience it, but I'm having a great time. I'm working for an excellent company and I'm learning loads, so I'm kind of getting the best of both worlds in a sense.
However, I do miss my shower back home.
