It's been about a month since graduation, you see your friends in their new careers and out having fun. You're stuck inside on your laptop all day job hunting and trying to stretch your money. Your day is coming, I promise.
Finding the right job does not happen overnight. Do not settle for a job that is below your capabilities or something you do not enjoy because you feel like you won't find the one you want. Broaden your search, include multiple cities where you might be interested in living, look to see if there are similar careers that will work as a stepping stone. Many people even change their entire careers in their lifetime, so do not think you have to find your lifelong job now.
Your life including your job, your car, your relationship, your income is not a competition, it is about you. Do not compare yourself to your friends, do what makes you happy. If working in retail, tech, construction, law, sports, marketing, or something else makes you happy do it. Do not let anyone discourage you from doing something you love because you "won't make enough money."
Use all of your resources to help you find what you want. Don't just use job search websites- chances are you won't find anything there. Make sure your LinkedIn profile is up to date and try messaging and connecting with people in the field you are looking to be in. See if there is a job fair nearby or a networking event. Even try contacting the company you would like to work for! If their website does not provide a jobs section, find a contact for the company and ask them to provide you with any information they can.
Apply for jobs even if you do not feel qualified. The worse thing they can do is tell you no, and then you can move on to the next one. Do not be afraid or intimidated to apply for a job. They will teach you what you need to know once you start. Companies understand when they hire out of college you may not have the most work-experience and that's okay.
Practice your interviews because you will get callbacks! In an interview, the most important thing you can do is be yourself. If you are truthful, considerate, respectful and just plain nice they will notice. You will be amazed how often someone who does not seem qualified for a job gets it because of their natural personality. Be yourself!
Finding a job can be extremely stressful, but make sure you take time to relax. You will find one, it just takes time, patience, and a little flexibility. Be yourself and take the time to find what you love. It will be worth it in the end to have spent a little more time looking for the job you want and love it than taking the first one that comes along. Do not be afraid to say no if you want something different. It's okay and it is your life!
