This past weekend I spent time in Colorado with a few friends. It was such a sweet time. The weather was beautiful, the mountains were breathtaking, and the break from school was very much needed.
Normally, I hate the ten to twelve-hour car ride going up to Colorado. Driving through Oklahoma and Kansas can be particularly boring as they are exceptionally flat. However, this trip, the car ride was one of my favorite parts of the trip.
The girls that were with me and I spent most of the car ride-sharing testimonies and talking about the work God has done in our lives. This was an incredible time of simply reflecting on the Lord's faithfulness.
Yet, during this time I was convicted.
In the joy and in the sharing, I realized there are moments I've forgotten the Lord's faithfulness. There are times in my life where I've looked around and I've asked, "God, where are you?"
However, Scripture states again and again that the Lord is ever-present. In Matthew 28:20, Jesus declares that He is with us always, even to the end of the age.
"Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age." (Matthew 28:19-20)
So, why do I forget this?
Often times I think we base our faith solely on feeling, and that's just not how it's designed to work.
There are going to be good days, and there are going to be bad days. Usually, it's easier to remember God's faithfulness on the good days because that's when we tend to feel His presence more tangibly.
Though, on the bad days, it's easier to forget. But it's just as important to remember God's faithfulness on the bad days as it is the good day--if not even more so.
This is where remembrance comes into play.
Throughout the entirety of Scripture, people remembered the Lord's works and remembered His faithfulness. They pointed back to specific miracles that the Lord worked and believed He would do it again. In the same way, we are also told to remember the faithfulness of God and His works of old. This is meant to serve as a reminder that the Lord has worked, and He will work again.
Recently, I've really been leaning into this truth. It's hit me hard because a lot of the time I don't take time to remember the Lord's faithfulness in my own life. I'm coming to realize just how much I've been missing because I've neglected to remember. For, remembering is such an essential and life-giving practice to faith.
Being able to pinpoint times that God has been faithful in your life will carry you a long way. It should deepen your love for Him and draw you closer to Him.
So, today and every day after I'm challenging myself, as well as all those who are reading this, to reflect on the goodness of God. What has He done in your life that is worthy of praise? How has He been faithful, and what is your response?
"I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old." (Psalm 77:11)
