Goodbye, Sophomore Year, And Hello To A New Me

My farewell letter to my past life.

Dear Sophomore Jasmine,

The year is finally over. The rough times are over — at least until August.

In my opinion, sophomore year was the worst. You suffered through a one-sided crush the entire year, dealt with rude teachers and struggled through tedious and difficult classes. I still remember the times when you struggled with seeing your crush during the day. It's absolutely painful thinking about your struggles to have a crush without even attempting to share one simple conversation with him. I still don't understand why you never approached him. Maybe this is a job only for future junior Jasmine. But anyways, I still am fond of the memories you made during sophomore year.

You got to know so many more people during this year. In fact, you got even closer with three of your friends. I absolutely love them. They're incredibly friendly, funny and understanding. You guys even have our own jokes together, now. I couldn't be more happy for you. These people probably don't know yet, but they helped you get through sophomore year.

The beginning of sophomore year was honestly so horrendous. There were times when you felt isolated from society. But eventually, things got better. You all got closer. School was more bearable. I honestly thought you would have to walk to your fifth period alone for the entire year. I remember that you always left lunch early to go to fifth period a bit earlier just to avoid feeling alone in the halls. It's kind of tragic, but it's over. The remainder of the year was the most memorable for you. I'm super glad you met these amazing people, and they were not only the memorable moments you had during your sophomore year — there were also your extracurriculars.

Working as the treasurer of the Beta Club, I connected really well with the officers and the sponsor teacher. You made a second family that year. You talked with them about your struggles in both your love and school life and everything. You shared a warm conversation with each and every one of them in a friendly manner. You even got to have more connections with upperclassmen. You finally stopped fearing the upperclassmen. I still don't understand where that fear came from, but hey, I'm proud of you. You conquered your fears, and you set a bright future for junior Jasmine.

Although your entire year was stressful, I can tell you that junior year will be better.

Love,

Jasmine

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
