5 Things I'll Miss When I Say Goodbye To California

See you soon, Golden State.

5 Things I'll Miss When I Say Goodbye To California
Caitlin O'Leary

I love California. I'm proud of being a Californian. I've spent the last 18 years surrounded by mountains, beaches, In n Out, Disneyland, and using the word "hella". But it's time for a change of scenery.

In a few days, I'll be moving 2,850 miles away across the entire continental United States. I have a lot of things to look forward to in my new state of Pennsylvania, one, in particular, is very exciting-- FOUR SEASONS(no not the hotel chain, the weather type). Five-hour plane flights, a change in time zone, and the beginning of four years of adventures and new beginnings at Villanova University await me. However, I'm a California girl at heart, so here are a few things I'm going to miss from the wonderful Golden State.

1. Rolling Hills

I know this isn't California's star quality, but wow does California have some beautiful hills. Seeing them change form bright green to golden brown is a welcomed sight in Northern California. Come to Clayton, you'll know you're home when you see the hills.

2. In n Out

Double Double. Crispy Fries. Chocolate Shake. Need I say more.

3. NorCal

As a NorCal native who lives only 45 minutes driving distance from San Francisco, I'm going to miss being located in the center of it. From beaches in Santa Cruz to ski slopes in Lake Tahoe, I'll miss the variety of the great (and better) Northern California.

4. Hella

It's a popular word here and it has become a recurring word in my vocabulary. I am a little scared that its use hasn't spread to states on the East.

5. The People

I've been blessed to grow up in such a diverse state. I'm proud to be a blue state, but I'm more proud to live in an area with political, racial, ethnic, and religious diversity. In my eyes, California epitomizes the American Dream. I'm proud to have grown up living that Dream.

I'm ready to leave, ready to find out what makes Pennsylvania and quite frankly everywhere else, special. Thank you to California for being my very first beginning.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

Top 10 Reasons My School Rocks!

Why I Chose a Small School Over a Big University.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
