Daily Journaling Is A Blessing In My Life
Grace Rigdon

No, I am not talking about the old fifth-grade diary that contains our deepest darkest secrets about the boy that sits next to us in science class. I am talking about keeping a journal by your side to reflect, write down daily motivation and to capture moments by your hand and not your phone.

In the middle of my first semester as a freshman, I realized that there was so much life happening before my eyes each and every day. I also realized that I was thinking so much differently than ever before, and I wanted to capture it.

I started attending Thursday church services, but I was empty handed. I would sit and listen to a sermon and wish days later I could remember the message more clearly. At that moment, I decided to bring a journal to write down key points of the message to carry me throughout my week. Several days later after the sermon, I could reflect on what I wrote in my journal and apply it to my day.

Sitting after class and doing homework, checking social media and constantly being around people can get exhausting. During the week, I would try to get a couple hours alone in a coffee shop and write about my week, struggles and prayers.

I noticed, after writing about my sins and struggles that I was quickly able to find peace within myself. Reflecting alone gave me a chance to be in touch with my feelings, emotions and lead me to the opportunity to think more clearly and effectively. Writing to myself about things I want to improve within my week gave me the chance to work and strive to a new greatness.

There is something to be said about being alone with your own thoughts that are good for the mind, soul, and body.

My mind after journaling is fresh and feels hydrated. I always feel rejuvenated and accomplished. Working every day and constantly multitasking can be hard and sitting and journaling is so relaxing, my mind is always set to ease.

My soul after journaling feels free and truthful. Having your own journal allows for truthfulness, and no one has to read it except you. I constantly am writing prayers, goals, and wishes which allows me to feel optimistic and hopeful during the craziness that surrounds us all.

Lastly, my body. After writing, my body is always restful. Our days are full and long and the still fullness you can feel after writing alone can truly change your mood and daily outlook.

With journaling I have learned to write about the beauty surrounding me, not capturing it with my iPhone. Photos are great, but when you can read back on a moment and read the words as to how you were feeling, there is nothing more amazing than that.

It can be fun to pick out a journal that speaks to you. My first journal said, "Life Is Always Now." I loved this journal to remind me that my life was happening and I needed to make the most of it today, tomorrow and yesterday.

I dare you to carry a journal around in your bag and find moments in your life that inspire you. Capture it with your words.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
