On February 27, 2017, Jordan Peele released 'Get Out' in theaters. A movie that revolves around the basis of an interracial relationship. During this movie, the black male in the relationship visits his white partner's parents home, and things take a crazy turn.
Most well-known critics like Peter Debruge from Variety or Manohla Davis from the New York Times called the film a 'satirical horror' that shows why black men frighten easily in white suburbs.
As of November 13th, the Golden Globes decided to label nominate this film as a comedy, because apparently painting the horrors of being black in a white atmosphere is a joke. Jordan Peele's only comment on the nomination was "Get out is a documentary," and he's absolutely right.
If you haven't seen Get Out, or you are not black, then you are probably confused. How could a horror movie possibly be a documentary? Constantly having to put yourself in a predicament where your race always will be a factor of how you're treated can be scary.
Yes, even in 2017. This is especially true when you are a black man getting involved with a white woman. No, it's not as scary as the 1950's where if you even looked at a white woman you could be killed; but it's scary enough that black men stray far from the idea.
We are supposed to be living in post-racism America, but there are still certain aspects of racism that are still incredibly present in today's time. One of those is interracial dating. In a poll done by the Chicago Tribune, thirty-nine percent said that they saw interracial marriage as a positive thing.
17 years ago, Alabama was the last state to overturn its ban on interracial marriage. Even though this country has now proclaimed that we no longer find interracial relationships scary, there still seems to be some tense conversation when the idea is brought up.
Peele's movie was an insight into the black man's mind, an interpretation of the horrors that black men face throughout their daily lives. Calling this movie a comedy is atrocious, and an insult to Peele himself. The next time the Golden Globes want to make a fool out of themselves, they should leave black people out of it.
