If you didn't know, the Golden Globe nominations have been released on Thursday early morning. The show this year will be hosted by Adam Samberg and Sandra Oh. While the Golden Globes do not count for an EGOT, it does help with setting up what will be likely to be nominated for Oscars.
However, it doesn't always help with predicting since movies are split into two different categories and the most talked about movies in most years (this year is one case of this) are separated due to the fact they are a Drama and a Musical or Comedy.
No surprise, "A Star Is Born" and "Vice" lead for film nominations.
These two films have been hyped up to win awards and will probably be the major competition for each other when it comes to the Oscars since the Golden Globe breaks them up for categories. "The Favorites" got nominated heavily in the actress categories (supporting and main), which doesn't come as a surprise as the film has been raved about for their acting.
I feel like the Golden Globes will favor all three of these movies in their categories.
"Black Panther," which has been talked about as a possible Best Picture Oscar contender, got a Golden Globe nomination. Although a superhero movie has been nominated for a Golden Globe (Deadpool in 2017), this could mean that "Black Panther" truly has a chance of receiving an Oscar nomination.
Also, this is the first Golden Globe nomination that Marvel Studios has received and the first superhero movie to be nominated as a Drama.
I found myself surprised at the lack of nominations for "A Quiet Place" in supporting roles (since there was the decision to promote all actors for supporting roles) and just in general. I do have a feeling we will see a few more nominations for them at the Oscars since the Oscars have "Sound Mixing" and "Sound Editing," but I expected at least more than one Golden Globe nomination.
I was also surprised at a few stubbed films and stubbed actors that didn't receive nominations or more than one nomination (such as Viola Davis and Steve Carell).
I was happy to see "Sharp Objects" nominated for show and Actress especially since it wasn't nominated for any Emmy awards. I was also happy to see "The Good Place" receive two nominations.
I was surprised to see that "Westworld" and "Handmaid's Tale" both received only one or two nominations and none for the big Best TV Series in their respected categories. This is especially shocking since "Handmaid's Tale" dominated the award season after their first season. "This is Us" also received no nominations this year.
I'm hoping that a lot of the Actors that won for TV shows/Limited Series Golden Globes win again such as Darren Criss ("Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story"), Thandie Newton ("Westworld") and Henry Winkler ("Barry").
Although, I would also love to see Amy Adams win for "Sharp Objects."
