With Halloween fast approaching, there's been no shortage of articles telling people (particularly women) what costumes are "overdone" and shouldn't be worn. Articles like this one and this one, that dictate which costumes are too "basic" or tell girls they're desperate for attention because of what they decide to put on to celebrate this holiday.
Cue the eye rolling.
Telling women they're attention-seekers because of how they dress or what they decide to be during Halloween (or any time of the year, really) is just so petty and unnecessary. Who are you to decide which costumes are "acceptable" for other people to wear? What do you get out of it, other than the stupid satisfaction of hearing your own voice or reading your own article?
There's nothing productive about perpetuating girl-on-girl hate and judging other women for how they dress or act.
I get that there are some costumes that shouldn't be worn because they appropriate certain cultures or are harmful to people. In that case, please, educate us on why these costumes shouldn't be worn. But when someone wants to dress up as a cat or they want to wear a tutu, who the hell cares? How does their choice of costume affect you in any way? It's a fun holiday and people should be allowed to dress up how they like (as long as it's not harmful to others) without having to deal with other people judging them or labeling them "basic" or "slutty."
Also, who cares if these people are dressing up to be basic or get attention? Maybe they want to be noticed, maybe they like the attention. Once again: why do you care? There's nothing wrong with wanting attention or wanting to be noticed. This doesn't make them a bad person and it certainly shouldn't lead to you looking badly on them just for that.
I'm going to dress how I want this Halloween. I don't care if you think my costume is basic or overdone. I'm dressing up to celebrate and have a good time with my friends.
I'm not going to be judging people for what they wear, and you shouldn't either.
