6 items to switch out at home

One of the biggest ways that millions of people around the world are doing their part in reducing waste at home is making the change of going green. But what does that mean exactly? In a sense, going green means using items that reduce waste that is currently destroying the earth. As of right now there are several grocery stores over in Europe who have taken it upon themselves to fight the plastic issue, and tossing out the plastic bags, making the customers use containers that are glass jars for weighting bulk items and bringing reusable bags with them when they enter the store. But how can one incorporate the green initiative at home?

Switch Out Tooth Brushes

Instead of using several plastic toothbrushes throughout the year, invest in a bamboo toothbrush. They are just as good, if not better, and they do not add to the already rampant plastic waste that is floating out in the ocean.

Reusable Water Bottle

Plastic cups are hard to dispose, and for the most part they are just going to lay in a landfill out in the open, being easy access for wild animals to grab. To combat the use of plastic cups, grab a reusable water bottle that you can find at pretty much every store. They are easy to carry with you, and there are several that are extremely stylish.

Metal Straws

Straws are used at home just as much at a restaurant, and instead of using the plastic ones get metal ones that will stand the test of time and are extremely easy to clean.

Cloth Napkin

While it might be tempting to grab a bag of napkins while you are at the store, it is actually hurting not only your wallet, but also the environment. What can you do in this case? Grab cloth napkins. Just like the metal straws and water bottle, cloth napkins are easy to clean.

Glass Jars

Instead of keeping all of your food stored in boxes that are prime real estate for bugs, rodents, and even the pets; grab glass jars. They are perfect for storing your dry goods and are sealed tighter to keep out bugs or anything else from getting it. Not only that, it is also quite aesthetically pleasing.

Package Free Soap

One of the best things I've seen in certain stores are the package free soap, because not only do they smell better and are actually healthier for you and your skin; but they are also reducing a lot of waste by not using any packaging. Best thing to invest in for you and the environment.

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
