Beginning on August 12, 2016 and lasting through the weekend, South Louisiana was hit with record breaking amounts of rainfall which led to historical and catastrophic flooding. So many people lost everything they had, from homes to cars to valued memories. The rain and floods kind of came out of no where and took many people by surprise. The amount of devastation in the South Louisiana are right now is beyond heartbreaking. But seeing so many people out and helping their communities in the most selfless ways is a reminder that God is always in control. Yes, bad things might happen, but above all we need to always remember that God will provide, God is there for us, and we are never alone.
“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compered with the glory that is to be revealed to us.” Romans 8:18
In times of struggle, hardship, and heartbreak, it is sometimes difficult to remember that God is in control. We simply want to dwell on the negatives and not consider the possible blessings that may come out of the struggle. We want to remain in control. We want to be the one to fix whatever it is that went wrong. But sometimes, that is just not possible. In these times when we realize we can’t “fix it” by ourselves and we can’t remain in total control, we should be turning to the one who can. God will never abandon us, and He will always be there to help us get through.
“God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.” Psalm 46:1
In all reality, turning it all over to God is a lot easier said than done. Giving up control is not easy. Trusting God amongst hurt and brokenness isn’t always very easy either. However, once we break through that barrier and give it all up is when the help and blessings begin to pour in. Whether it’s something as simple as your Starbucks order being paid for by the person in front of you, or a group of people showing up on your doorstep willing to help with whatever needs you have, God will provide and God will reveal himself to you in ways you would have never expected.
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, and he will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6
It is always said that God works in mysterious ways. That is what I am choosing to believe with all of the devastation around us. Yes, the situations are absolutely terrible. It is beyond heartbreaking to see so many good, hard-working people lose everything in such a short period of time. However, seeing the amount of love and support being poured out towards those hurting is beyond amazing. The amount of selflessness and willingness to serve is incredible. And there is no doubt in my mind that God is revealing Himself to those who are hurting through those who are helping.
