Foundations… I'm not talking about the powdery makeup that you put on your face; although it feels like society wants us to use makeup as a foundation to cover up our "flaws". Foundations are something that you base your life around and can even become dangerously addicting without us recognizing it. For instance, an alcoholic will use alcohol as something to fall back on. When everything feels wrong, they will drink to "forget" pain, when in reality, the problem is still there so it can never truly be "forgotten."
People who bring everything back to themselves grow more selfish every day. They are only hurting themselves in the midst of their troubles. This is the same with emotions. If you are letting your feelings get the best of you, chances are they are only hurting you because you are letting them. You are giving them the power to hurt you rather than asking God for help.
Recently, there was an analogy that a pastor used with tea and hot water. At first, he showed us that if you dip the tea bag into the water, the water will only turn a little bit darker. However, if you let the tea bag soak for a long period of time, the tea will turn dark and will taste more pleasant. God wants to overflow your cup with his grace, and the way to receive his goodness is by feeding our minds with the truth.
Reading the word is such a simple concept that gets overlooked.
The Bible is our main source of peace and without it, we find ourselves time and time again stumbling over our own fears and doubts. Our cups will only remain half full if we never give God the opportunity to come in and be a foundation in our lives. The word is alive and needs to be lived. All anxieties and doubt will be cast aside; we just have to be willing to go to it as a resource. Sometimes this is easier said than done.
Sadly, there have been a million and one times that I have had no desire to open the Bible because I thought that I did not have enough time but in reality, I was just plain lazy. In order to motivate myself, I have to remind myself that if God created the entire universe and all of the people in it, why couldn't I set aside fifteen minutes to let his words soak into my heart?
The truth is, all of us will make something else a priority before God at some point in our lives. We are human, and we will put our focus into other foundations such as friends, school, a job. It is not always easy to live out God's plan for our lives, we all have flaws. When you feel like you are spiraling off of the tracks, remember that God has your entire life planned out.
When God is on your side and is the main foundation, nothing can come in between to break that bond.
