Five days of the week I sit in class.
Once a week I sit in His house.
While I sit in class, I stare down a microscope at a single celled organism. I am told this is where life began.
I sit in the back pew at church. Here I am told that He spoke and the world was created. I am told that he knit me together in my mother's womb and He has a plan for me.
I can't help but wonder sometimes if it truly is his plan to have me sitting through science class after science class. Surely, God wouldn't ask his children to listen to professors deny his existence. Does He know how hard it is to sit in a classroom, with a cross around your neck, having everything you've ever believed questioned?
The answer is yes.
He knows our path. He has prepared our way. I believe He not only knows how hard it is to sit through such things, but that He asks us to. He does not ask for us to be tempted, for the Lord will not allow us to be tempted more than we can bear. But he does ask us to take up our crosses and follow him.
Because He knows. He knows our paths. He sets us upon it and walks with us in love. Walks with us because this is our love story. A love story in which he would not see us fail, but instead succeed. For He knows that although the trials that we face are difficult, they will lead us to serve him better in the future.
He knows that we will become the doctors, rocket scientists, and explorers. He has planned for us to operate on hearts, and create medicines. He knows we will attend the birth of some of his creatures, care for them their whole lives, and ease them in their passing. He knows we will sample the earth and search through the stars. He knows we will give glasses to small children, and help chemo patients when life seems too much.
He knows that the days will be hard, but they will be worth it. He will reaffirm our faith with every step we take. A test study of water turbidity or soil acidity shows He made the land and water. Observing wildlife makes it so obvious that He created the beasts of the fields and the birds of the air.
Looking down a microscope at a small, small cell will show that He knitted every single cell together with love and care. That He knows every single one of your trillions of cells because He made them. He has made the science major and walks with us now in our love story. Though we may not know His plan for us, we can say with great certainty that he will use our ready minds and exploring hearts to glorify His name.
