When It Comes To Coffee, Go Local Or Go Home

Here's why I would pick a local coffee shop over a coffee chain any day of the week.

Anyone that know me knows that I am OBSESSED with coffee. My life revolves around it; no one can talk to me before I’ve had my first sip of coffee in the morning, I refuse to work anywhere but a coffee shop, and I study my best in a coffee shop. Some people are dedicated to their chain coffee shops when they know that they will get their cup of coffee just the way they like it no matter where in the world they order it, I am a local coffee shop fanatic. Here is why I love checking out the local shops.

1. Each shop expresses the personality of its owner.

There are no two local shops that are the same and that is because they express the personality and tastes of its owner. I’ve been to coffee shops that look like the Mad Hatter designed them with couches, tables, and stools from 20 different furniture sets and I’ve been to places that are all sleek and modern that look like they belong on a cover of a magazine.

2. The staff can have a little more spunk.

I don’t know about you but I haven’t recently walked into a Starbucks and have the person behind the cash register greet me with “what the F$%k do you want, ” and a smile. I always enjoy getting to see staff be able to show off their personal style because they don’t have to follow a strict dress code or have to sit through orientation where they are given scripts on how to interact with staff.

3. Trying out the shop's specialty drink.

While chain stores have their seasonal specialties that consist of pumpkin, peppermint, and gingerbread, their menu tends to never go too far outside the box. I’ve been to coffee shops that offer Elvis mochas, turmeric lattes, and coconut rose London fog. Try going to Starbucks and ordering one of those.

4. They make for the best studying spots.

Ever tried to study at a Dunn Bros during their rush hour? The wifi is slow, the whole shop is loud, and all the good tables are taken. Try getting anything productive done in that.

5. SUPPORT LOCAL!!!!!

I come from a small town where we are all about supporting local. I have mad respect for anyone that is willing to risk it all and open their own business. If I can do my part by just buying a simple cup of coffee to support their dream, while it's caffeine, you don’t need to ask me twice!

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
