This past Saturday, around 60,000 people crowded the Great Lawn in Central Park to partake in the Global Citizen Festival. Global Citizen is an organization made up of ordinary people that strive to make the world a better place, focusing on carrying out actions that will really, truly help people around the world. This year's main focus was education, more importantly females being able to attend school. It was stated several times throughout the night that while education is important for everyone to have, it is harder for females across the country to obtain an education because of sexist laws and certain countries not valuing women's rights.
If you were unable to see the event, here are some of they keys moments you missed throughout the night.
1. Performances
While they may not have been the most important part of the night, there were several performances from different bands and artists including Coldplay, Ed Sheeran, Ariana Grande and Beyonce. All of these were great, and really added a positive, upbeat side to the festival. It was a great mix between performances and speakers. As always, Beyonce was perfect, but her performance was a little more impactful than I've seen it before. In between songs, videos were played that focused on women's rights and education. Words also flashed on the screens to show important feminist views.
2. Michelle Obama
If you're a fan of the First Lady like I am, this part was meant for you. A major portion of her speech focused on not only providing education for everyone around the world, but to provide education to girls around the world that were unable to receive it. She promoted the hashtag #62milliongirls, which is the number of girls who are unable to attend school. This goes along with her campaign to raise awareness for those who cannot go to school. She also mentioned that it is not just an issue of education, but it is also an economic issue and a health issue. Check out the hashtag being used on Instagram and Twitter to see how it's being used!
3. Malala Yousafzai
If you are unsure of who this is, I highly encourage you to do some research and look up her story. Now 18 years old, Malala is known for defending her right of an education to the Taliban, which resulted with her being shot in the head. Surviving the gunshot, Malala has become a major activist for female education and is the youngest to ever receive the Nobel Prize laureate. During her speech she states that a main issue with the lack of education is not money, because the world has millions and trillions of dollars, but that there are not enough people standing behind this issue. She hopes this will help create a movement for educating the poverty and hopes extreme poverty can end by 2030.
The Global Citizen Festival did a great job at showcasing why education is so important through performances and impactful speakers. Hopefully this can create the movement to moved forward with providing education to everyone, especially girls who are unable to obtain it.
