What is Brexit?
If you don’t remember the showdown that was the Brexit vote in 2016, here’s a brief refresher: The EU is a trade union for 28 European countries (27 post Brexit.) The EU works to prevent border controls and to encourage international trade and movement. Taxes are all standardized across the member nations and there are no tariffs or duties imposed.
Why is Brexit a thing?
A public vote was held in 2016, and while many still vehemently oppose leaving the EU, the vote weighed in favor of saying “goodbye” to the union.
Where are we now?
Divorce terms have made some progress. The UK and the EU have decided that the Brexit transition will begin on March 29th, 2019. This is the first major step forward for these negotiations to take.
What’s coming?
Overall, it’s going to take a very long time for this process to complete. Along the way, trade and travel are going to be up in the air within the EU. In the words of the European Council President, “We all know that breaking up is hard. But breaking up and building a new relationship is much harder.”
