"Good luck. I mean that sincerely. In perpetuity, Hannah.”
When we last left our favorite band of girlfriends on Girls, Marnie had just broken up with her husband, Desi, and began seeing Ray, Shoshanna learned how to put her NYU degree into practice, Jessa was lying naked on the floor next to Adam after a particularly hostile game of throwing-and-breaking-various-items-in-the-apartment, and Hannah had finally let go of her bad feelings towards her best friend and ex-boyfriend and had decided to move on.
So, what’s next?
Season 6 premieres on February 12, and while I am so excited for the show to pick back up (a year is just too long), I am also anxious for all the things this season may bring. After Hannah’s thoughtful, if not poorly-timed, fruit basket and note is left outside of Adam and Jessa’s door, what happens? Are the lovers torn apart by the ever-present “Hannah” floating around the room, or are their fears calmed?
And Marnie, stiff and beautiful and high-maintenance Marnie, and Ray’s relationship—what could come of it? Surely, they will have their problems this upcoming season, but are they in any serious danger of breaking up after Marnie’s confession of love to Ray? I don’t think it would make sense, considering Marnie chose him over her husband.
Then again, there is always room for a twist or two.
At NYU’s Q&A with Girls’ Alex Karpovsky and Jon Glaser, the two actors gave practically nothing away for what is in store this next season, save for Jon Glaser’s slip-up about Laird getting his act together and scoring a real job in season 6!
Other than that, however, I am still left wondering how this upcoming season can make its mark. It is the last season, after all, so something big needs to happen. Maybe Hannah scores a book deal? Shoshanna lands her dream career? Adam and Jessa work out their problems? Marnie makes it big as a singer? Or, it could go the other way, with small victories leaving big marks. Maybe Marnie doesn’t continue with her singing career, but she doesn’t care because she loves Ray. Maybe Jessa and Adam split up, but remain friends and find people that create a less-problematic relationship.
Then again, this is Girls, meaning that all the above scenarios are probably false and the show’s writers are going to mess with our heads this season just as they did with the previous seasons.
Let’s just hope we finally get some diversity in the show. (You know it’s true.)
Whatever is in store for this mysterious, scary, hopeful, and hilarious last season, I think it is important to remember why we watch this show in the first place. The idea of four girls trying to make it in New York City with friendships and relationships that are just as realistic and messed up as everyone else’s is just so deliciously average that it has become unique. We are the Girls girls, after all, with all our baggage and drama and memories, too.
On February 12, grab your girlfriends and some popcorn as we all start the beginning of the end.
