I'm almost certain that every female who likes video games, anime, comics, or really anything pertaining to, or like, said things have had that one extremely annoying experience where a man would try to "educate" you on things you already know. However, If you haven't experienced it yet, trust me its bound to happen sometime down the line so be prepared when it does.
I do not mind it as much when It is something I truly do not understand, it does help. Yet, If I was to be in a conversation and a random guy was to but in and try to tell me something I was well aware of, I would not be so understanding.
This has, in fact, happened to me, and It constantly reminds me that some men just don't understand that sometimes women know just as much, If not more, then men on some of these topics. When the incident happened I was carrying on a conversation about Marvel on a bus with a close friend of mine, our conversation was along the lines of stuff dealing with the Avengers and X-men.
As I was in mid-sentence, I kid you not, the guy behind us blurts out "You know X-men is apart of Marvel too, It's not just the Avengers," and then continued to try and get into our conversation. I just stopped talking completely, and so did my friend. If you have seen any Marvel movie, you would know the logo pops up in the beginning; clearly indicating that it is indeed a Marvel movie. He may have meant no harm by it, but to interrupt my conversation just to tell me that was more than enough to get my blood boiling
Women should not have to deal with men constantly trying to do things like this while they are doing something that they like. Just because a girl is in a comic store, it doesn't mean she knows nothing. In fact, a friend of mine was told to be careful when going to comic book stores by herself, because some guys like to "test" you on how much you know to see if you are a "true fan". She even expressed to me that one time when she went to one alone, someone asked if her boyfriend had sent her there and it has even happened at the game stores.
It's ridiculous to think that because she's a woman that she would be questioned, Comics are for people to enjoy, not be attacked over. My friend has also had some messed up experience with a video game store in Tennessee, She told me that she was approached by a worker who asked if she needed anything, and after she picked up a copy of Mortal Kombat, he informed her that is had blood in it, because she didn't seem like she was into that stuff. My friend has stories upon stories about experiences she's had with stores like this.
And It is insane to think this is how women are being treated for liking these types of things.
On another note, I know this isn't every comic book/anime/video game loving guy or store worker. There are lots of helpful guys out there that can give you help and advice and respect the fact that you are a female and enjoy these things too. Those are the type of guys every guy should aspire to be, don't assume someone likes something else because of the way they look or their gender and you'll be fine.
Like I said, everyone wants to do the same thing in the end. Enjoy that really good anime that you've been waiting to come out for years, Play that game you've been saving up for months, and buy that comic book to complete your collection.
