A few days ago, I was scrolling through my Facebook feed when I came across a post that just about broke my heart- and no, it wasn't one of those cute videos about a dog without legs getting prosthetics.
This particular post was written by a mama describing what she overheard her daughter saying, and it's something I'm sure we can all relate too.
The sweetest, most genuine six-year-old girl was talking about needing to exercise after her bath to lose weight.
Why?
Because a boy at school that day called her fat.
As women (and men), we are taught from the beginning that thinner equals better and nothing tastes as good as skinny feels.
It crushes me when little girls as young as six years old really begin to take these words to heart.
It crushes me that little girls are being taught to hate their bodies.
It crushes me that hating our bodies isn't a phase we will easily grow out of.
As someone who has fought tooth and nail to conquer anorexia, it shatters my heart when I hear someone so innocent and pure say such devastating words about themselves.
What's even worse is that I hear these almost exact words said by this little six-year-old from women of all ages.
To end this body hatred battle once and for all, we need to learn that we are more than a number on a scale or a size on our shorts.
We need to think more like this mama by saying (and believing) that God uniquely and wonderfully created us and that exercise should be joyful and intuitive movement that is done to care for our bodies, our hearts, and our health.
So, we can either listen to the voices telling us we are fat, or we can say f*ck that, I'm beautiful just the way I am.
It's your choice.
