Odyssey always has interesting pieces that come up in my news feed. The other day I saw one entitled, Don't Eat Like Sh*T And 8 Other Ways To Get A Perfect Summer Bod Like Mine. Let me tell you, this article received A LOT of hate. Truth be told, I don't really know why.
I'll give y'all this - the headline was a little self-involved, but is that a bad thing? In this day and time when women are constantly being beaten down for how they look, is it really a bad thing a woman has a little self-confidence?
Anyway, this girl did something no one wants to have - she gave y'all a wake-up call. She didn't sugarcoat it, and boy did she get some hate from it:
"Go back to your frat party and do a keg stand, sweetie." "Take your self-righteous body and leave." "Stop telling people how to live."
I found the hate this girl got to be absolutely shocking. It highlights EVERYTHING that is wrong with this society:
1. Easily offended/triggered individuals
2. A lack of self-confidence amongst women across the nation
3. A united effort to tear down another woman who has exuberant confidence
If you are fine with how your body looks, that's perfect! Keep doing you! It takes a lot of time to get to a place where you're completely comfortable with your body and don't want to change it. I applaud you!! Every woman across the globe deserves to feel beautiful in her own skin. Every woman deserves to have confidence.
But for those who want to change, this girl gave you a wake-up call. You are where you are because of who you are. If you are overweight *AND WHINE ABOUT IT,* you have no one to blame but yourself. However, there are fixes you can make to help get you where you want to be.
All the author did was tell everyone exactly how to get that "perfect summer bod." She didn't tear anyone else down. She didn't force her views on anyone. She didn't say anyone had to change anything. She didn't say that anybody type that was different from hers wasn't perfect, all she said was that if you want a perfect body like hers (which a lot of people do), to follow her 8 tips.
Weight loss is a formula. Burn more calories than you take in. That's all it takes. That's it. If you do that, you will lose weight. She gave everyone tips on how to lose weight and get that toned summer bod.
I'm not saying that there aren't genuine health issues that prevent weight loss/contribute to weight gain (Cushing's, Hypothyroidism, Syndrome X, etc.), but does every overweight person have one of these disorders? Nope.
From someone who has dealt with anorexia and bulimia for years AND someone who used to be 25 lbs heavier than I am now, I can personally attest to the benefits of trying these tips. Exercise especially. There's something so wonderful about working out every day - something that gives you control over your body. Combine that with eating right and you'll get any result you want.
There are days where I eat like crap and don't exercise. Not only does it show, but I can feel it. But when I start eating nutritious food and exercising regularly again, I lose those few pounds I've gained quickly. It takes discipline and not many people have it.
The author's article was in no way intended to add to eating disorders or crush an individual's self-esteem, it was intended to give you a wake-up call if you want to change your body. And the author didn't sugarcoat it.
Moral of the story: We all have insecurities. My little pudge at the bottom of my stomach still gets me to this day. But I am confident in more than just my body. I am confident in the hard work it took to get where I am with it. I am confident in my abilities.
Every woman deserves that. Every woman deserves confidence and to feel beautiful. Just because a girl said her body type was perfect, doesn't mean yours isn't either. And she sure as hell did not say that any other body types weren't perfect either.
