10 Gifts For The Education Major Graduating During A Global Pandemic

The Class of 2020 is the first class to graduate amidst a modern, global pandemic. For education majors, their last semester of college and full student teaching experience has taken from them and they are entering an uncertain job market. While schools will always be in need of teachers, many communities still don't know what the fall semester will look like, and year-round schools are still faced with closure in the summer.

Now more than ever, they need your support. Helping them get ready for a successful first year of teaching is really going to make a difference. So here's 10 gifts that will help future teachers lead and educate!

1. A planner

Teachers live by their planners. It's a staple to stay on top of lesson plans, bell schedules, and endless meetings. Beginning teachers especially need to start off as organized as possible as there is a lot to adjust to and learn in their first years of teaching.

With COVID-19, teachers may experience school closures, so a planner will help them keep track of the changes. Don't forget to throw in some colorful pens and stickers.

2. Cleaning supplies for their future classroom

If you can find anything, cleaning supplies are a must for a new teacher. You may think this sounds boring, but if you've ever been surrounded by a class of kids incubating a stomach virus, one of whom just vomited next to your desk, you know how heavenly it is to have a replenished supply of Clorox wipes. Put it together in a fun, cute basket.

3. A comfy office chair

Invest in a comfy office chair for their home workspace. They will need it - whether they'll sit there while grading papers when schools are back in session, or to teach from home.

4. Luxurious bath bombs, soaps, and lotions

Bring some joy to your favorite grad's self-care routine. Bath bombs are perfect for ultimate relaxation at the end of a long workday, bath salts can soothe sore muscles, and body butter is great for keeping stressed out, frequently washed skin soft. Crystal Bar Soap is a small business that gives back to the community through their Collective Change initiative.

5. A new stand-by drink mug full of surprises.

Get them a travel cup that they will always want to have on hand. Think a water bottle that reminds them to stay hydrated, a giant coffee mug for early mornings, or a smoothie shaker. Get one that is tailored to their interests or is personalized to the field they teach in. Then, fill the bottle with gift cards to their favorite coffee shops or lunch stops.

6. Gift cards for clothes and shoes.

If your grad student taught recently, they may already have begun building a wardrobe, but every teacher knows the importance of good shoes and appropriate clothing. Going from quarantine to dressing professionally for work on a daily basis is going to be quite a jump. Future teachers will definitely need new clothes and sturdy shoes.

7. A smartwatch to stay on top of everything.

Teachers are on the go for most of their workday, and they can't always have their phone by their side. A smartwatch is a great gift for someone who wants to track their physical activity and be on top of messages and emails. Plus, a watch is perfect for recess or timing out lessons.

8. A durable bag to carry all their supplies.

Teachers need tote bags that can get all the papers and materials from point A to point B with ease. Find something durable that offers lots of organization and comfort.

9. A paid membership/subscription to something that will make their life easier, like meals or fitness.

Depending on their personal interests and needs, a paid membership or subscription that can bring some ease to their life is a great, thoughtful gift. If they struggle with meal prep, a meal delivery service like Freshly or Blue Apron can help them stay well-nourished throughout the upcoming school year. If your grad loves to workout, consider a subscription to their favorite virtual fitness group, like Tone It Up or Camp Gladiator so they can release their stress and stay healthy. Get creative with it! An Amazon Prime membership, an Audible subscription, the possibilities are endless!

10. Something they can remember their college years by.

This year's graduates faced a challenging final semester. Get them something to remember their college years by, whether it's a piece of memorabilia they can display in their classroom, a scrapbook to hold game day ticket stubs and photos from their time on campus, or a class ring.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
