It is important to make sure we actually know what is going on with this bill. Some of the false information floating around can come from websites providing false information to sway one side or another, your neighbor who is trying to prove their point loud and clear or it could just be a misunderstanding of what is being said.
Many people on social media have claimed that the bill is unfair because women who receive abortions will be criminally punished. This is not true, you can see in Section 5 where it states that no women will be criminally liable. Another misleading argument is that women who miscarry will be punished which is also untrue, the bill speaks of intentional abortion, not health incidents such as miscarrying.
When arguing for either side keep in mind that it was a woman who sponsored the bill and Governor Kay Ivey signed into act. But keep in mind women are not all to blame either, because the 25 of Alabama's Senate were, in fact, men.
What about exceptions? It is true the bill does not allow exceptions for rape or incest. While these pregnancies do not occur often this now means any women, even if it just one woman, will have to continue their pregnancy if conceived through rape or incest.
Why is it important to get the facts right? With any argument presenting accurate information with sources to back it up will help prevent false facts from floating around. Refrain from using religion to prove your point as not everyone may follow your religion and because of separation of church and state. Media outlets that are non-biased are going to be the best to gather information from because they are not trying to appeal to the left or right side.
It is also important to be sensitive when having these debates, present your facts with respect to the person you are speaking to. It costs nothing to be nice and you can easily get your point across without name calling or using vulgar language.
