Getting surgery of any sort seems really scary, especially when we are young and usually haven't gone through procedures before. However, take a deep breath, it's actually not so bad.
This past Monday, I got my gallbladder removed because it was causing me pain due to gallstones. I was so freaking scared! Not only have I never had any procedure done before, but I also do not deal with pain... like at all.
It's been about five days after the surgery, and I haven't taken any painkillers for about the last three days. I know every surgery is different, but from my experience, the pain is manageable easily by painkillers. Also, because we are so young, our bodies can heal faster and with greater ease.
I never experienced a long period of pain. Right after I woke up from surgery, I was really really numb and only had pain when I coughed or was getting up. They put in local anesthesia into my abdomen so no pain was felt for the first two days. I literally walked two miles outside today. Yes, my stomach felt tight, and yes, I was slow, but there was no pain.
The cons of my surgery were backache and bad sleep. Because I couldn't pick up my body from where I was sleeping — because that required abdomen muscles I can't move right now — I slept against pillows and my back had a lot of pressure on it because of the bad position. That caused my back to hurt and I kept waking up because I wanted to sleep in my normal fetal position. However, I am slowly able to sleep normally and the back pain is reduced.
If you are getting surgery in the near future, I want you to know it's going to be okay. Make sure you know exactly what is going to happen before, after, and during surgery. Have friends and family around you after and you will get through it! And because we are young, our recovery time is usually quicker than average.
