I feel a little out of place writing this article seeing as this subject is one that is understood by everyone. A more difficult piece might have been to write about reasons not to have a dog in college. Then again, the article would be full of LIES. The truth is, there is no reason not to have a dog in college. There are no reasons not to have a dog in your life period. To those of you who are allergic to our fuzzy friends-my deepest sympathies go out to you. You are brave and you are strong enough to overcome these struggles.
In the case that you do not already have a dog while society is forcing you to navigate through the complicated maze that is a college career, here are perhaps the most important reason to go out and get one.
1. They are beautiful inside and out.
The outside part is obvious. I am sure that you are well aware at this point in your life of just how much the outward beauty of a puppy can tug at your heartstrings. The way that a golden retriever's hair flows in the wind, or the bounce of the curls of a poodle is enough to make a grown man cry (tears of joy that is); the wagging of a long or nubby tail at the sight of anything that moves, or the soft panting of their breath-basically every part of a canine is a catch.
2. They are always up for cuddles.
Morning, afternoon, and night are peak cuddle times for any pup. Playful or calm, big or small, pups are constantly up for relaxation right alongside their favorite pal. They appreciate the fact that you are able to sleep through all hours of the day and won't yell at your like you mother will. They send a plethora of mental thanks to you as you blend couch time with meal time so that they can gain easier access to your food scraps when you're not looking. They'll lay right next to you as you sleep peacefully and protect you against the sound of any intruder (or the crunch of a leaf ten miles away.)
3. They won't ever disappoint you.
Unlike most humans, dogs are incapable of disappointing you. It's a proven fact. They will never be late for dinner. As soon as you sit down at that table and open up your bag of Chick-Fil-A, they are right under your chair just waiting for the feast to begin. They will never bail on plans. They will never say no to a venting session or a Grey's Anatomy marathon. They won't judge you for eating an entire sleeve of girl scout cookies in one setting. Most importantly, as you turn to them with your very best outfit on, you are certain to get a tail wag.
4. They will never stop appreciating you.
Dogs are thankful for absolutely everything you do. They get excited when you make eye contact with them alone. They will run up to you as soon as you walk inside the door every single day. They will wag their tail rapidly at the sound of their food hitting the bowl and as you approach them with a treat at any given time of day. Their gratitude radiates off of them as you sit down on the floor offering up your best tummy rubs. They literally cannot ever be disappointed in you.
5. They will never fight with you.
Your faithful pup is physically incapable of disagreeing with you. They would not ever dream of it, in fact. They only care about your happiness which in turn contributes to their own happiness. They will never turn down a walk around the park, an all day movie marathon, and even support you with occasional hand licks as you sit at your desk all day doing homework. There will be no disagreements among friends as close as you two.
Dogs are a blessing straight from above. It is fact and this article is in no way opinion based. I'd like to take this moment of your attention to suggest that if anyone has been influenced enough by this article to go out and get a live-in best friend of their own that you rescue a pup instead of going to the local pet store and buying one. This not only cuts costs, but will save the life of a dog in need of a home and anxious to give you their undying love. If you already have a dog companion, make sure you show them some love today.
