Getting Away From It All

Sometimes you just need a break.

Getting Away From It All
Victoria Weiss

I love being on the go. Keep me busy, on my toes, always moving. Even the fast-paced souls need a break, though. The one's that love being around people but at the end of the day revel in time alone. The one's that pack in everything they can in one day but sleep it out on lazy Sundays.

It's kind of like when you need a vacation from your vacation. Having fun and creating the best parts of your life can be seriously exhausting. We want to do so much with this finite time frame. Sometimes it just gets to be a lot.

There's different ways to get away but no matter how we all need to.

Take a drive, with location unknown. Look around you and experience beauty with all the vastness of the world. See where time can take you. You can race through the miles down the road, but you'll miss places and sights. Coast, but do so intentionally. Every curve and uphill is meant to be there. Know where you want to go and never forget where you came from. Drive and drive until you know you need to go back. There's no harm in taking a few miles just to bring yourself back.

When you're especially burnt out, jam out. Blare it so loud you can't hear yourself think. Play songs that take you back to feeling cool, special emotion. Dance it out if you feel like it. Lay in your bed and cry if you need to. Listen to yourself and let feeling seep out. Focus on lyrics and think about all the places linked to them. Middle school, prom, preteen sleepovers, old movies, long road trips, favorites from years back or 'Your Song.' Listen to your new favorite jams and see how you've changed as much as you've stayed the same. Get out of your head for a little while, letting music do that for you.

Particularly effective is also darkness. Closing your eyes, unconsciously letting yourself drift off is a type of relaxation we don't always have time for. Dark can be very peaceful, as even with eyes open, we are closed off from the sights we normally stay too focused on. In a sense, it can also be eye-opening in a way, lost in thought only as you see things. Escape to a dark place, not a bad place, but a dim one. For this one, stay in your head and sort through all the darks and lights in your jumbled little life.

And you don't always have to be alone to get away from everything, by the way. Sure at times you need to get away from everyone, but not necessarily. Sometimes people can help talk things through, you know that job that friends have both willing and unwillingly. It's good to have people that bring you to your senses and calm you down. It's really an assuring thing to experience that kind of friendship, too.

We all need to run away, not just once or twice but many times throughout our lives. We're always ready to go, but rarely aware enough to slow things down before getting too crazy. Take a break every now and then to let your life cool off. Get in touch with yourself so you don't lose it before the week's halfway over. Always come on back, but know it's okay to get away every once in awhile.

Drive. Sing. Sleep. Talk. Run. Repeat.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
