A little word of advice: get involved in college. Trust me, you won't regret getting out of your pajamas to go to a meeting at 6 p.m. that gives you free pizza. I have fallen in love time and time again with the organizations I've been privileged to be a part of, and out of all of these, I've found out that people truly do have your back and your best interests in mind.
For example, UPB (University Programming Board) has been my home. The people in this organization truly feel like my family. We argue sometimes and give each other too much sass, but at the end of the day, we love each other and help each other out. We communicate. Maybe a little too much, because sometimes you gotta mute a group message every now and then. We have the best advisor, seriously, shout out to Mario who is the best ever! Thank you so much for working as hard as you do! We truly appreciate you for all your ideas, time, effort, patience, help, advice, suggestions - the list goes on. Being a part of UPB is so wonderful. It's so great to get to do fun, creative things with some amazing people. And being able to see others having fun during our events makes the long hours so worth it!
Being in a sorority has also been a blessing, even though I feel like I haven't appreciated it as much as I should. I'm thankful for the woman they have tried to mold me into. The values to uphold and the positive principles make it so beautiful. I remember the first girl that I met in my chapter was our former philanthropy chair, and to see her love something that I love too was just so heartwarming. Knowing that sisters have your back even when you don't know what you're doing in life is amazing. A huge thank you goes out to the sisters that have helped me get through life and have loved me, even on my worst days.
Of course, it's always a great idea to join an organization that involves your major. Pre Professional Club has been that, for me. I enjoy volunteering at the local food bank and just knowing that there are other people on the same journey, is pretty neat. It's definitely an inspiration to keep trying, even when it gets hard, so you can accomplish what you've set your mind to do.
If you don't have school spirit, you should. I'm so glad I was able to be a part of the beginning of Mustang Maniacs. I am so excited for what this year has in store for us. I can't wait to paint up, go to the games and show appreciation for a place that I truly do love.
Getting involved opens so many doors for you. You gain so many connections and friends, references, advice, help, etc. You don't have to face things alone. You grow with people who share an interest in something you are interested in. They keep you accountable, they lift you up - and let's be honest, it's super fun.
We have over 100 organizations on campus here at Midwestern, so there's got to be a home for you out there somewhere. I can't wait to see MSU '19 get involved, and even some more upperclassmen! So, the next time the opportunity presents itself, don't turn it down because you will enjoy being a part of something greater than yourself.
