The Georgia basketball team came out flat against a similarly struggling Texas A&M team Tuesday night. The team scored just 21 points in the first half and things did not get much better in the second.
The final margin of victory for the Aggies was 17 points.
Nicolas Claxton shouldered an impressive amount of the scoring load but was not able to get consistent help from the rest of the team. Jordan Harris was the only other Georgia player in double figures with 10 points on the game and he is not necessarily known as a proficient scorer.
Rayshaun Hammonds had yet another game where he struggled to find consistency. He scored just 5 points, adding 3 turnovers, but the number standing out the most is his 1-3 shooting night. He shot 3-4 on free-throws. Commonly thought of as the focal point of the offense earlier in the year, Hammonds is all of the sudden reluctant to shoot the basketball.
The Aggies had three players in double figures and all of them scored 15 or more.
The top performers of the game:
UGA
Nicolas Claxton: 18 PTS, 10 REBS, 1 AST, 1 STL, 1 BLK
Jordan Harris: 10 PTS, 8 REBS, 2 ASTS, 2 STLS, 1 BLK
Teshaun Hightower: 9 PTS, 2 REBS, 3 ASTS
A&M
TJ Starks: 19 PTS, 3 ASTS, 4 STLS
Jay Jay Chandler: 18 PTS, 3 ASTS, 1 STL
Christian Mekowulu: 15 PTS, 15 REBS, 1 BLK
Georgia was thoroughly outplayed in the cases of rebounding and defense. The Aggies shot 42.9 percent on the game but they held the Dawgs to just 35.3 percent from the floor and just 13 percent from three.
Defense has been the calling card for most Georgia basketball teams over the years but this year's squad in particular has struggled scoring enough to keep up with the opposition.
Number 19 ranked LSU comes into Athens Saturday and Miss St. will pay a visit on Wednesday.
Georgia is riding a tough 1-9 record in the last 10 games.
With a tough schedule remaining, the Dawgs look to figure themselves out and head into the offseason on a high note while adding a strong recruiting class for next season.
