Recently a picture surfaced of former "Cosby Show" actor Geoffrey Owens bagging groceries at his local Trader Joes. In the picture, the actor looks like a deer in the headlights; minding his own business and looking up to find people ogling him to the point of taking a picture.
Owens is best known for his stint on "The Cosby Show" but has made other appearances in popular shows, most recently in the FOX drama "Lucifer." He is a graduate of Yale University and a husband and father.
To expose him in his place of employment is a disgusting act of classism and you should be ashamed. Whatever the reason he decided to take up a "day job" to supplement his acting career is not anyone's business and to expose that shows the sick nature of our culture.
Our culture places those with insane amounts of money at the top of the food chain, with the most importance, almost like gods. Our culture creates the idea that if you don't have money your life is worthless and everything you produce is worthless. Evident in the way the interaction was described, exposing Owens working a lower level job was more of a sick fascination than a simple star struck moment. They took a moment to recognize him, then realizing it was him, they saw an opportunity to show someone formerly famous serving them.
In our culture, we are also constantly pushed to consume. Consuming entertainment, consuming gossip, consuming products and updates. We are never not in the know about the latest news and we devour embarrassing clips and funny memes. When someone is not constantly placing themselves at the forefront of our attention to entertain us, they are immediately seen as "burnt-out" with a life in tatters.
Some entertainers choose to step out of the spotlight and lead a normal life. Owens has been married to the same woman since 1995 and the couple has a son. Just because he hasn't flashed his life for the entire world to see since his role on "The Cosby Show" doesn't make him irrelevant or in bad shape.
I remember looking at the picture and immediately feeling second-hand embarrassment for Owens. How weird and self-involved do you have to be to think that was OK? Especially without asking the man?
Owens, it's OK to have a day job. It's OK to work at a grocery store. Whatever your reason is for taking the job at Trader Joes, just know it was shameful for those people to take a picture of you and their actions do not reflect all of the world.
