Being young does not make us irrelevant, being black does not make us dangerous, being Muslim does not make us terrorists, being homeless does not make us useless, being rich does not make us greedy and it does not put us above the law, being poor does not make us lesser, being make-up free does not make us ugly, and being made up does not make us slutty. And circling back, Women are without a doubt equal to men in every way.
It gets easy to disregard the pivotal topics that corrupt society. It is also easy to be illusioned by the common misconception that young people cannot speak up and actually make a difference. This; however, is one of the least true statements you will ever hear. We are the future of the world. Ignorance is NOT bliss, it is, in fact, one of the most dangerous things we will ever be faced with. Some are convinced that women should not complain about lesser pay rates and instead get quote “a better job”. It is not, however, the profession a woman chooses, it is the industry and management linked with the occupations.
I will continue to protest privately and publicly for the rights and equality of all people, including women. We can’t look away when we see something that isn’t right. It is there that ignorance manifests even in the least suspecting of persons. It might not be one's intentions to accept sexism, but the first step to a static society is keeping quiet. Fighting against the status quo causes a ripple in an ocean of people who cannot feel the current going against them underneath the water. Creating this ripple on the surface is the only way to get the attention of the ignorant.
It is not okay for women to be treated differently, especially in the professional atmosphere of the workplace. Some men think it is okay to flirt with co-workers in an inappropriate and uncomfortable manner. That reflects on the level of respect given to females. Sexual assault is also a very serious and very relevant matter. Women who wear revealing or “provocative” clothing, are ABSOLUTELY NOT asking to be raped.
It is common human decency to make everyone feel comfortable and safe. Women should not have to be constantly worried about facing discrimination at work, school, or in life. It is immensely frustrating that one of the most powerful men in the world, who happens to run our country, has little to no respect for people as individuals and women as cherished and incredible parts of society instead of toys used for men’s amusement.
WE ARE THE FUTURE. We are human. Being human makes us stronger, because we are stronger when we love, we are stronger when we emphasize on the unity of the country, we are stronger when we fight for what we believe because it is only when we lose that fight that we should be worried for our humanity.
