I associate colors with each month, day and time, and I'll be there for you through every shade.

To My Future Froomie
Cayla Keiser

Dear Future Froomie,

As of this moment, I am knee deep in college applications, just as I'm sure you are too. There are so many little things running through my head right now — deadlines, essays, scholarships, school work and on top of all that, the thought that pops up every once and a while of who you might be. You could be someone I know or a total stranger. That thought is a little scary!

It’s nerve-wracking, thinking that in a year we’ll be going through a whole rollercoaster of emotions. We’ll be leaving the comfort and familiarity of our family and friends back in our hometown, adjusting to college life and classes, along with the sometimes terrifying, sometimes exciting, reality that we’ll be on our own. Thankfully, we’ll be doing it together. That’s why I’m here to tell you not to worry, because you’ll never be alone. You’ll have me! And as your future froomie, let me tell you a little bit about myself!

I'm short. I have long brown curly hair, blue eyes, and pale skin. I'm Jewish. So yes, I have heard every Jewish joke and stereotype in the book, and I still laugh at and embody them all proudly. I wear my Star of David necklace every day and love kugel and latkes like nobody’s business. I have a collection of over 400 pairs of earrings, as well as a host of rubber and stuffed ducks and I love to wear striped sweaters and jeans.

I’m a night owl. I do my best thinking at night, I learn the most when the sky is dark and the crickets are chirping, and I personally believe that it’s when the best and most heartfelt conversations are had. I also, however, love to sleep. Like, a lot. Not just because it renews my energy and gives me a get-up-and-go attitude, but also because I love to dream. I love to see all the kinds of crazy that my brain can come up with, then do my best to remember it when I wake up and get annoyed with myself when I can't. Chances are, you’ll find me taking little naps in the middle of the afternoon.

My favorite numbers are 14 and 64, my favorite colors are purple and green, and I associate different colors with each month, day and time. I love binge-watching "Friends," even though I’ve already seen every episode way too many times. You’ll frequently find me eating either popcorn or a scoop of Nutella when I’m in the mood for a snack. I have an unhealthy obsession with fruit snacks, and I don’t believe in dinner without dessert. Traveling is my favorite thing ever, and I save fortunes from fortune cookies because I believe that they come true.

I’m GREAT at procrastinating, but once I get my head in the game (I’m also a frequent marathoner of the "High School Musical" movies and all things Disney Channel), there is no stopping my determination to get stuff done. I won't walk around barefoot — I have to be wearing either socks or shoes. My favorite things to do are write, take photos, and listen nonstop to the band Train. No, I do not ever get tired of them and yes, I do,in fact, listen to other music. Hockey is my favorite sport ever: I can name every team in the NHL with ease.

I am a huge advocate for the Deaf community; I love American Sign Language with all my heart and am always looking for the next opportunity to sign instead of speak. I don’t like people in the morning, especially those who wake me up. If I am snappy or short with you come morning, I promise I don’t mean any of it. Once I get a glass of milk, I’ll be back to my happy self. I’m very organized when it comes to my life and school work, but I must warn you: my bed will never be made, my desk will probably have some random stuff on it, and I will have drawer full of random nonsense.

Most of all, you’ll find that I’m dedicated to the people I love. I always offer up my shoulder to cry on, I'll laugh until I can’t breathe anymore about funny little inside jokes, and I’ll make time for you when you need me. My ears will always be open to listen to you rant about people who get on your nerves or about how the season finale of your show left you with the most obnoxious cliffhanger and you don’t know how you’ll make it the next three months without knowing what happens next. I LOVE to give hugs. I'll never leave you hanging and will totally go on spontaneous adventures with you on the weekends. I’ll break down and throw the “I can’t handle all of this!” fit right alongside you at the beginning of the year and eat buckets of ice cream with you when you’re having a bad day. But most of all, I’ll be there walking by your side through all of the new adventures we are about to go on together.

All my love,

Your future froomie

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
