Bitcoin: Positive or Negative?

Bitcoin is a word that many people hear today. It has become extremely popular due to its frequent mention and monetary value. To give more background information, Bitcoin is a cryptocurrency, which is a digital asset used as a medium of exchange, and Bitcoin was the first decentralized cryptocurrency to be introduced. Since Bitcoin, there have been numerous cryptocurrencies that have been created and this new found craze for a decentralized currency rather than the centralized money and banking system we use has become more prevalent and popular in our society.

This new technology proves to be one of the most innovative and impactful creations to our society, changing our future in ways that we never imagined. However, I believe this change is a bit more fatal than we may expect. With Bitcoin gradually taking over our way of exchange through currency and monetary values, our central banking system will soon prove to be useless and all our exchanges will be strictly digital and decentralized.

This idea of every exchange becoming completely digital is extremely scary and daunting. Many people get lost in the digital age where identities and personal information are stolen. The intersect between a digital age and decentralization makes people afraid of their own assets in addition to their identities that are already shown all throughout social media. With transactions and currency becoming digital, people will not have control over anything.

Also, in this digital age, I strive for the idea of privacy. Privacy has become a huge issue due to the heavy reliance on the digital world. With Bitcoin, transactions are public and no matter how private you are, digitally, anyone and any information can be found within seconds.

Therefore, Bitcoin will only make our lives less private than the digital world has already made it through various social media outlets. There are certain parts in my life that I would like to be kept private, but with transactions in addition to our personal and social lives becoming digital, there is no room for privacy.

I fear that one day, our lives will be completely digital and human interaction won’t be necessary. However, this huge leap in technology through Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies has only heightened my fear. With the idea of transactions and exchanges becoming digital and decentralized, I am positive that sooner or later, human interaction and communication won’t be necessary to live out our lives. Even today, we can find out a lot about people we have never met in person through their online presence.

Actually thinking about it, it is terrifying how much of our lives and information are revealed through just a few digital platforms. Cryptocurrency only opens another door into our lives that will be revealed digitally, making all our information have an online presence we can’t control. First, we mainly get our news and daily information on social media. Second, we put out our personal lives through pictures and videos online. Third, we communicate with our long distance friends and families through video chats.

Fourth, we meet our partners and friends through online apps and programs. Fifth, our transactions and exchanges are gradually becoming digital and decentralized through cryptocurrencies. Who knows what will become digital next?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
