Fun Or Frightening?

Five fun facts about spiders that you might find neat or absolutely horrifying.

Listen, folks. Let's have a chat. There are few things in this world that terrify me, but let me tell you, people, I would rather fight an angry bear than be anywhere near a spider. They're creepy, crawly, and gross. Yes, I know they serve a purpose but that doesn't mean I like them any more than I like Trump's Presidency. So here is a list of fact that you might find fun or frightening.

1. There are 40,000 different species of spiders

That's right. 40,000. You read it right. BUT GET THIS--scientists think that there could be just as many more species that they haven't discovered yet. That means there are over 40,000 different types of creepy crawly monstrosities are all over the world.

2. Spiders can be found on 6 of the 7 continents

Spiders can be found on every continent except Antartica. THERE IS NO ESCAPE. That's it. I'm moving to Mars (as soon as SpaceX successfully colonizes it). So, the moral of this story is you either have to accept that spiders will be wherever you go, or you just live in denial (like me) and hope you never feel one crawling up your arm like I did last week.

3. There are vegetarian spiders...kinda

If we're being honest this picture gave me the creepy crawlies the entire time I was looking at it; however, I'll admit this fact is pretty neat. There is a species of spider called Bagheera Kiplingi and it is the world's only (mostly) vegetarian spider.

4. Spiders have superpowers

Spiders have between two and six spinnerets at the back of their abdomen. Each one is like a tiny showerhead that has hundreds of holes, all producing liquid silk. EW. EW. EW. I don't know about you, but that is just not a visual that send me to the sea of tranquility. When spiders crawl, they have four legs on the ground and four in the air at any given time. THEY'RE HALF LEVITATING AND IT'S UNNATURAL. There are species of spiders that can eat birds....BIRDS. If that's not a superpower, I don't know what is.

5. They can kill you

Okay, okay. So, it's rare, BUT STILL. Black Widow spiders can cause nerve damage, high blood pressure, painful muscle contractions, and facial spasms. The Brown Recluse's venom can cause red blood cells to burst. SPIDERS ARE MURDERS.

6. They're crucial to the ecosystem

I know I've spent this whole article giving spiders a bad rap, but all in all they are good for our ecosystem. They eat harmful insects, pollinate flowers, and help recycle dead plants and animals back into the earth. They also act as a valuable food source for many birds, mammals, and fish.

I guess spiders can be okay, but that doesn't get rid of my crippling fear.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
