Of course, we cannot start the fall fun-filled festivities without first appreciating the changing season. It is always a beautiful site to see the leaves change from a deep green to a rustic orange and brown. As nature's colors orient to deeper hues, one can almost begin to imagine a table set with a rich and delicious pumpkin bread with a warm light cinnamon tea beside it. Fall — a season where we can still enjoy the outdoors and appreciate the chilly weather that envelops the months of late September, October, and November.

Now is the time, more than ever to participate in thrilling fall activities, both indoors and outdoors before the winter winds take over. Consider making a traditional pumpkin bread, but also add a little twist, and decorate your place with several DIY Autumn decors. There are countless things to do but here you will find a few ideas to get you started.

1. Read spooky tales from your childhood.

Do you remember those eerie stories that always had the tendency to send chills down your spine? Maybe it was a childhood novel, like the children's series Goosebumps by R.L. Stine, or maybe it was the haunting words "Quoth the Raven 'Nevermore'" from the immortalized poem "The Raven" by Edgar Allen Poe. If these stories do not refresh your memory, how about these: Bunnicula, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark, and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow. Cater to your inner child and give it what it desires; go down memory lane by picking up a book from the past and spook yourself once again.

2. Plan a Harry Potter marathon.

If only we had a Platform nine and three-quarters and could aboard a train to the magical world of Hogwarts. However, you can never go wrong with just a Harry Potter marathon. Even if the novels are not your favorite, the Potter series is an exciting way to get everyone together for some late night enjoyment. Grab some homemade popcorn, sprinkle on some cinnamon or pumpkin spice, drizzle it with honey or maple syrup, and voila! You have got yourself a light snack and wonderful movies to watch, all while in good company.

3. Start a football extravaganza.

Fall and football go hand in hand. Being a lover of the sport or not, there is no way around the celebration you will see and hear for late night football. Instead of sitting behind the television screen while all the fun is had elsewhere, attend a local game or grab a football of your own and play a little game out in a field with some friends or family. Perhaps flag football would be more exciting to do, but if neither of these games appeals to you, simply introduce some sort of friendly competition. Maybe a potato sack race will suffice! If not, you can even attach a cut-out of a pumpkin around a cornhole game board, and feed the pumpkin (throw) stalks of corn. Whatever you choose, a little football-like competition is sure to give a little edge to your fall plans.

4. Get lost in a maze.

Nothing represents fall like a good old run through a corn maze. In case you are unfamiliar with it, a corn maze is simply a maze cut out in a large cornfield. During this time of the year, farmers welcome anyone to challenge themselves by walking through this giant puzzle they have created. Locate some of your local farms and prepare to get lost for a bit! Wear comfortable shoes, bring some water, and, depending on the time that you go, grab sunscreen or a flashlight. Time yourself and see how long it takes you to find the exit.

5. Watch a Tim Burton film once a week.

If Harry Potter is not your cup of tea, then Tim Burton — the man who has won our hearts with his eccentric artwork and films — is another perfect person to center your films on. His countless movies are an ideal match for the foggy and moonlit nights this time of the year. There is no doubt that watching Frankeweenie, Beetlejuice, Batman Returns, or Corpse Bride will get you into the fall feels, especially with Halloween coming up. Give Burton's artistry your attention this fall to add a little craziness into your weekly adventures.

6. Carve a pumpkin (of course)!

Celebrate fall by getting a pumpkin at a local pumpkin patch — which can also be another adventure — or from your local market and put your carving skills to the test! Sure a toothy grin is fun and traditional, but if you want to get extra creative this year, check out some fall-motivated Pinterest boards for inspiration. Try to carve out a Disney villain or a large jail cell, and then place a smaller pumpkin inside of it to create a baby inmate. You have many options to choose from! If all else fails, turn your pumpkin into a delicious treat such as flourless pumpkin pancakes, English muffins, or breakfast brownies.

7. Try some leafy DIY Autumn Decor

Not everyone has the budget to buy all of the fall-related decorations on display in your favorite stores, but that does not mean you cannot make your own. To start off with something simple, gather some tape, strings, and fallen leaves (or cut out your own). All you have to do is cut various strings to the length that you desire, tape some leaves on the ends of them or spread out several leaves throughout the entire length. Now, just hang those leafy strings from your ceiling, and you're set! You can even tape the strings side by side to a wooden stick and hang it up on your wall. The same can be done with pinecones! Again, Pinterest will be your best bet to finding easy and affordable ways to decorate your place.

8. Volunteer at a food pantry.

It is always a wonderful time to help others, regardless of the season, so consider doing so by volunteering at a food pantry. Not only will you be assisting people and their families in getting enough nourishment for their daily needs, but you will also be providing them with the chance to use the money they do have for other essential items and expenses. Those of us who are able to enjoy the seasonal festivities and foods should always take advantage of the opportunity to give back to the community so that they too can share the excitement we all have for the changing seasons.

9. Participate in a "Thriller" flash mob.

Dancing by yourself is great and all but it is even better when you do it with a group of people focused on bringing a smile to others' faces. Now is the best time to find a local flash mob or to create your own and learn the iconic "Thriller" choreography, performed by the one and only Michael Jackson. Then, when it's "close to midnight and something evil's lurkin' in the dark", strut your moves and have some fun! You are sure to make some exciting memories during the time it takes to accomplish this event.

All in all, you have a myriad of fun-filled choices to make this fall. Add or tweak some of these ideas into your bucket list, grab a camera, and begin checking some off while taking snapshots of all the thrilling and joyful things you decide to do.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
