From A Pea, To My Pumpkin

The story of how a baby grows.

From A Pea, To My Pumpkin
Christina Feely

Sitting in the parenting section of Barnes and Nobel drinking Chai tea at least once a week has really exposed me to many different types of pregnancies. I enjoy reading about different parenting styles and things to look forward to in a pregnancy. Some people walk past glaring like, "Wow, is she really reading parenting books? She looks 12." Some might think, (when I have makeup on and normal clothing) "Oh how exciting, a new mommy!" And then there is me who really just loves the thought of being a mom. So, I sit and read just because I'm bored. No mom, this is not my way of telling you I'm pregnant.

I've always been fascinated by how a baby grows inside of its mother. The thought of someone being as small as a pin-point and growing into a full-grown human being completely baffles me. I have read a lot of comparative books in the parenting section of B&N, and I really like how you can physically see how big your baby is throughout the trimesters. I thought it would be fun to make my own comparative article!

The duration of a pregnancy usually lasts around 40 weeks.

Week 1-3: Conception

Most women don't know they're pregnant until roughly week 6, but since you're able to track what size your baby is by week 4, that's where I will start.

Week 4: Glitter/Pin-Point/Sand Particle

Hi, baby! You are officially a thing. This is real. You are real. You are a real human being. You are roughly 0.014-0.04 inches in length. One of these small specs of glitter is what you look like!

Week 6: Pomegranate Seed

You have tripled in size from week 4, baby! You're now surrounded by fluid and roughly the size of a pomegranate seed. You are about 1/8 inches and weigh less than 0.04 oz.

Week 8: Sunflower Seed

You have webbed fingers and toes by this week, baby! You're about 0.63 inches which is comparable to a sunflower seed without the shell. You still are less than 0.04 oz.

Week 10: Fork

You're getting so big, baby. During week 9, you changed from an embryo to a fetus! You are now the width of a fork! Obviously, you're much cuter. You are 1.22 inches long, and weigh 0.14 oz.

Week 12: Flash Drive

Two weeks have gone by, and you're still growing like a weed! Now, you're the size of a zip-drive (as I call it) but according to the internet, you're a flash drive. You're 2.13 inches long, and weigh almost a half an ounce (0.49 oz).

Week 14: T-Strap Heels

Not only do I love the 50s era, but I also love that I can compare you to it, baby! By entering the second trimester at week 14, you are around 3.42 inches which is roughly the height of a t-strap heel for swing dancing. You are much lighter, though, and weigh only 1.52 oz.

Week 16: Avocado

Hello little avocado! You can make fists now, and possibly start sucking your thumb! You are about 4.5 inches long, and weigh 3.53 oz. Wowza, from only two weeks ago, you have gained a substantial amount of weight! What are you eating in there?

Week 18: Crayola Marker Box

You're pretty fun-sized this week. You are the size of a Crayola marker box, minus the green part on top. After knowing you're able to hiccup, I also found out you have your own fingerprints now! You're roughly 5.6 inches long and weigh 6.7 oz.

Week 20: A Mango

By this time, your legs are larger than your arms, and you like to give little punches to Mommy letting her know you're in there. You're also starting to grow your own eyebrows and a little hair on your head. You're 6.5 inches long and weigh 10.58 oz.

Week 22: Barbie Doll

You are smack dab in the middle of Skipper and Barbie baby! Your skin responds to touch and your lungs are developing quickly. You're about 11 inches long and weigh 15.07 oz.

Week 24: An Ear of Corn

Hi baby, you can actually hear voices this week! Your brain and ears have been doing lots of developing. You can now recognize mom's voice. Your nostrils are also beginning to open for you to start breathing soon! You are 11.8 inches long, weighing 1.32 lbs! No more ounces baby!

Week 26: Party Tassels

You're getting pretty mobile now baby. You are starting to stick out your tongue, and grab the umbilical cord. Your eyelashes are starting to become very defined. You're 14 inches long and weigh a little over a pound and a half at 1.68 lbs.

Week 28: Butternut Squash

You can now determine whether mommy or daddy is speaking to you, baby. During this third trimester transition, you can also start opening your eyes and blinking. The food I'm comparing you to looks pretty funny, but you don't. You're still cuter. You are about 14.8 inches long and weigh 2.2 lbs.

Week 30: Audi Steering Wheel

Yet, another object I love! You are now the length of an Audi steering wheel. Your skin is still pretty wrinkly baby, but soon you will fill it out. You also are able to sleep on your own, and kick mommy when you're awake!

Week 32: Toaster Oven

Walking around my house trying to find a unique item you're as long as, I found the Black and Decker toaster oven to be a perfect fit. At 16.6 inches long, and 3.75 lbs, you can now tell mom what you like and don't like to eat. Since we're so far along in the pregnancy, you will be gaining roughly a half a pound a week.

Week 34: Cantaloupe

Hi, baby! Your bones are fully developed by now. You can spin, flip, dance, whatever you want inside mommy. You're about 17.7 inches long and you weigh 4.23 lbs.

Week 36: A Bag of Potatoes

During this week, baby, you've gotten quite heavy! You're weighing in at 5.378 lbs. That's roughly the size of an average bag of potatoes. You are now 18.6 inches long. Now, you are flipped upside down in the uterus, getting ready to be born!

Week 38: Watermelon

Connections are forming in your brain that will help you swallow and sleep better. Movement is happening throughout your day. Now you weigh as much as a mini-watermelon at 7.25 lbs. You're about 20 inches long.

Week 40: Pumpkin

Getting ready for you to be born has been a real journey. Growing from a pea sized baby to now a pumpkin! Weighing between 7-9lbs on average, you will be around 20-21 inches long, baby.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
