How Friends University Is Exactly Like Hogwarts

Ever look at Davis and see Hogwarts? Well Friends is so much more like this fictional institution than you thought.

1. Groups found on campus

Gryffindor: Athletes

Just as in the books and the movies you hear mostly only about this specific house. This is because of the protagonists, who represent the story, are in this house and athletes represent the school. Athletes are Gryffindor because they are expected to juggle school, practice, mandatory library hours, as well as attending the games and all of that is pretty courageous.

Ravenclaw: Musicians

During finals, you will always find that the students at Riney are getting ready for juries and you’ll hear the practice rooms filled with the beautiful sounds of a cello, piano, or even singing. On the outside, these students may seem calm, but they are hard workers that commit to perfecting their talent. If that isn’t a Ravenclaw then I don’t know what is.

Slytherin: Science Majors/ Zoo Science

I can already hear the mental groans about some students being placed in Slytherin, but hear me out! Most, if not all, science majors are very ambitious in the sense that we want to change the world, apply to medical school, work with exotic and diverse animals, and even teach our profession like Snape. We are determined to succeed, even if it means spending hours in the library trying to understand a subject, having only a select few friends who have our same vision, and even teaching others in the writing center. Science/Zoo Science majors are the definition of a Slytherin and that’s overlooking the fact that there are actual snakes in the science building.

Hufflepuff: Christian Spiritual Formation majors

It wouldn’t be a Friends University article without them, and they are quintessentially Hufflepuff. CSF majors and students involved in Campus Ministries are the nicest people at the University; they always have something kind to say and have no problem adapting you into their social groups.

If you were placed in one of these houses and don't like it, don’t worry because even though Hermione is housed in Gryffindor, we all know she is really Ravenclaw.

2. Friends University looks exactly like Hogwarts only on a much smaller scale.

Seriously, Davis is a castle.

3. We all know that one professor (especially science students) who is exactly like Snape: tough, but fair.

4. The dining hall at Friends is also a place where everyone can go with their group of friends and catch up on the latest events in their lives.

5. Students attend Hogwarts for seven years…Need I say more? Okay, not every student takes seven years to finish, but there are a few who do need that time.

6. Most of your professors are like Hagrid in the sense that they care about your well being, your family, and even invite you over to their homes.

7. You are allowed to bring a small, approved pet to live with you on campus. Check with your RA’s first but don’t quote me on this.

8. You can study anywhere you’d like: on a hammock, on the grass, in the library, Casado, Davis, or Riney.

In case you really can’t find anywhere to study, there is a room where I like to study, but it’s my secret spot and it only shows up when you really need it.

9. There are so many activities going on both at Hogwarts and at Friends. F.A.C.E (Falcon Activities and Campus Events) always keeps you busy.

Even though you aren't trying to save the world from "he that shall not be named", they are exciting activities.

10. It is always good to come back home to Friends University and see your people who have basically become your family.

If you are new, don’t worry! You will instantly make new friends on Orientation day.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
