To the best sitcom to ever be put on TV, to the show that was my religion every day at 4:30 p.m. when the reruns came on after school, to the show I've watched countless times through on Netflix, and to the show that can always give me a laugh when I need it: "Friends."
There are many reasons why this show is and always will be the best; Here is a little insight as to why..
1. It's the best pick me up.
If you're having a bad day, or even a good one and just need to laugh a little, you can always rely on "Friends." Each show presents a new issue for the group, but the way they handle it demonstrates that all of us can get through tough times, if we just keep the laughter.
2. It displays true friendship.
Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Phoebe, and Joey all came from completely different backgrounds- well minus Ross and Monica of course (best sibling duo ever). No matter the situation, no matter the argument, they were always there for each other. It didn't matter where they came from in the past, they were all stuck like glue and wouldn't have it any other way. It teaches us that we should all have that mentality, it doesn't matter if you grew up as a spoiled rich girl like Rachel, or if you came from a super horrible past like Phoebe; their friendship is never-ending.
3. The theme song.
You're lying if you don't know this song like the back of your hand. "When it hasn't been your day, your week, your month, or even your year, but... I'LL BE THERE FOR YOUUUUU". Okay I know I made that last part a little extra, but come on, do you not scream it at the top of your lungs every time it comes on? Their theme song demonstrates their love for one another, no matter what they're going through, they'll be there for you. We should all strive to be that way for other people.
4. The Characters.
Each of the six of them is completely different, but they each teach us a valuable lesson. Rachel taught us that it's okay not to be okay sometimes; for instance season 1 Rachel, she was totally lost, and even throughout the 10 seasons she progresses into this amazing independent woman, but she still has her flaws and that's what we love about her. Its okay to not always have it all together. Monica taught us that sometimes you have to be the mom. She really is the mom of the group, that's why it's so beautiful in the last season when she really gets to become a mom herself because she spent the past 10 years taking care of everyone before herself. She taught us how to selflessly love. Joey, who doesn't love Joey?
He teaches us that life doesn't have to be taken so seriously, it's actually a much better time when it's not taken seriously. On the outside, Joey has two thoughts: food and girls. But he actually has the biggest heart of them all, and would do anything for each and every one of them. Chandler shows us that sometimes sarcastic comments really can get you by. Honestly, he's kind of right. Who needs a deep heart to heart when he could just offer you a sarcastic comment instead. Lastly, Ross; he teaches us the most important lesson: follow your heart. Now, maybe don't get married as many times as he did, but you should go after what you love. And hey, you just might get the girl to get off the plane in the end. (If you don't understand, please go watch the season 10 finale- you won't regret it.)
5. The Ross and Rachel saga.
I just love them so much, the nerdy boy who always had a crush on the pretty popular girl in school- sounds like your typical love story, but its so much more. From the first few seasons of getting to see him win her over in adulthood, to the middle seasons when he ruined it by what he did on the break (seriously boys, if you're in a heated fight with your girl one night, even if you say things you don't mean, such as "lets take a break"...don't go sleep with someone. We will always find out.) As the series draws to a close, it's apparent that Ross doesn't want to let her go, and in the back of Rachel's mind she wants the same. There will never, ever be a better love scene than when Rachel shows up in his apartment because she got off the plane. "I got off the plane," possibly the most iconic sentence ever said in TV history. It's true, when two people truly love each other, no matter how much they drift apart, they will always find their way back.
If you've never watched "Friends" and have had any interest after reading this, I HIGHLY encourage you right now to drop everything and go start season one (it's on Netflix, no excuses.) Or if you're like me, go rewatch the series for the 7th time because as Monica would say, it is her favorite number.
With love,
Taylor Thompson
