Ever crave something so much you feel it in every fiber of your being? That is what I have been feeling about cuddling. The loss of intimacy does not escape me after my last relationship ended. It seems like every night, the feeling of being wrapped in someone else’s arms ravishes me as I try and cope with a mountain of pillows and stuffed animals. Everyone says humans are social creatures and need physical touch, but how does that span for the single people in the world? How can someone personally be satisfied with oneself when all she wants is to feel the cocoon of warmth from a significant other? Here’s my suggestion for how to fill your life when you have a void in it.
1. Fill your life surrounded by family and friends.
Even if you do not get the physical connection of an intimate relationship, you can still get the love from the people closest to you. Go spend time with those who make you the happiest. If you have a day in which you feel stuck in a hole, let them know you need someone to be there with you. They will not be able to read your mind as you try and cope with your inner most thoughts. Just being close to a person can give you an emotional high.
2. Go take a walk outside.
Check out for a half an hour or so and just walk and relax. Let your mind go as you breathe in the smooth, fresh air around you. Leave everything behind as you let yourself relax from a hard day. Even if it is a walk around the block or going on the bike trail, it helps to let those feelings go.
3. Take yourself on an adventure.
Ever wanted to go out and do something? Let yourself go and do it! Give yourself the escape you need to go have some fun. It is sometimes nice to take yourself out on a date either by yourself or with your besties. Trying something new and exciting can give you an amazing high. I personally love going to the House on the Rock. It was my favorite field trip when I was younger, and now that I live even closer to it, I still love going there.
4. Give yoga or meditation a chance.
Let yourself take a relaxing breath with a new activity. Let your mind go as you breathe in the good vibes of the activity you participate in. Its slow rhythm and your tranquil thoughts will put you at ease as you breathe in and out slowly, releasing the tensions you have built up in your body.
5. Pick up a new hobby.
Learn something new like painting or arts and crafts. Sometimes rejuvenating your creative side will be a way to relax and have some fun. They always say “practice makes perfect,” so you never know how well you can pick up something until you do. And who knows, you might be able to sell some of it making a few extra bucks on the side. When I joined this SNHU Odyssey Team, it allowed me to build my skills as a writer, and I have done more writing than I had in years. You can always tackle on the old hobbies you let go because sometimes, it is also nice to be able to do as much as you did then.
6. Drink some of your favorite beverage.
Either brew yourself some of your favorite tea or coffee, or whip up some delicious hot chocolate. It allows you to relax and love some goodness in a cup as well. I love going to Telsaan and enjoying the drinks there as a refreshing change. All it takes is a few minutes to sit back and relax to love the precious moments.
7. Snuggle up with a good book.
Sometimes, cuddling in a soft blanket and one of your favorite books is all you need. Letting your mind wander off and permitting the book to lead the way is a perfect outlet to relax with. It gives you time to get away in your own home. It lets you connect with beloved characters, scenes and adventures within the book.
8. Go out and volunteer.
Sometimes, helping those in need can help you to fill the emotional void. Giving back to the community, with groups such as the Salvation Army and the International Lions Club, can give you joy from knowing you are helping take care of others. I have been a member of the Lions Club since I was 18, but have known about it through family most of my life. I can pledge that it is a very fulfilling organization.
9. Give yourself some cruise time.
Another suggestion is just getting in your car and driving, which can be the release you need. Taking time to view the scenery and exploring the country roads can be a fun time. It also helps when you can blast the music in your car as you drive.
10. Go spend a little.
Not recommended to do this too often, but sometimes, it is nice to splurge a little on yourself. Give yourself something you have been wanting for a while or go out for a little pampering. It allows for a little fun on a smooth day.
