10 Things I've Learned In My First Month of College

It isn't quite like the movies.

As I pass the halfway mark of my first semester, I thought it would be important to create a list of ten things I learned in my first month of college.

1. You'll get lost.

When you are on a giant campus like Ohio State, you aren’t gonna know where you’re going like, ever. My first week there, I spent an hour walking down High Street to find an ATM for PNC and ended up in tears. I still have to GPS my classes sometimes because I get lost… Yes, I am THAT freshman.

2. Making time to work out is hard.

You have to force yourself away from studying in order to find time to workout. You will realize you don’t have time for it, but you need to do it. So take a break from studying and homework, and go to the gym.

3. Study breaks matter.

Studying chemistry for six hours with no breaks actually does not help you at all. The only thing you will really be learning by doing that is that you hate Chemistry. Studying is not meant to be done in large time periods. Study for an hour, take a break and a snack. You will obtain a lot more information this way.

4. GPA isn't everything.

Even if you are getting really good grades in college, your GPA is still probably not a 4.0 unless you have an A in every single class. That is okay.

5. No matter how smart you think you are, there will always be someone who is smarter than you.

Do not let this intimidate you. Competing is the worst thing you can do in college. Focus on yourself and how you are doing as a student.

6. Never try to get every single thing done before you study.

More and more homework and projects will be assigned and you will end up putting off studying until your first midterm and realize, “Oh crap, I don’t know anything.”

7. Joining clubs is a great way to maintain sanity.

Club meetings and activities force you to get out of your dorm room for an hour or two and actually have human contact for the day.

8. Sleep is vital

Don’t stay up until 1 a.m. every single night. Go to bed early, because if you don’t it’ll eventually catch up to you. And those 8 a.m. classes come faster than you think.

9. It’s okay to pig out every once and a while

You don’t have to maintain your perfect body every meal. Stress eating is a huge part of college, just make sure it’s done in moderation.

10. You’re gonna change your mind

About majors, about roommates, about lifelong friends, about old relationships, and about new relationships. This is a whole new chapter of your life and you should be worried if you DON’T change your mind about things. You are learning who you are and who you wanna be.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
