To my freshman friends:
I know you’re going to hear this a lot over the next four years, but it’s a statement that is full of truth: high school goes by a lot quicker than you think.
I still remember the first day I walked into our school as a freshman around four years ago. I almost started crying on the way to English class because it was the first class I had that I didn’t know at least one person in.
While your high school career is really only just starting, mine is coming to an end more quickly than any of us really think.
A few months ago when I began my last first day of high school and you were just starting your journey, I wanted to make sure that you felt more at home than I did when I first started.
In choir when the leaders were playing icebreakers, I made sure to introduce myself and start a conversation. I walked with some of you to your next class and since then, we’ve talked almost every day.
That’s why when you came to me and told me that you didn’t want me to graduate yet and wished I could come back next year, it hurt my heart a lot more than you probably realize.
Don’t get me wrong, I’m OK with being a senior. I’ve done my time, and now it’s your turn.
I knew what I was doing when I went out and tried to be friends with people who I would only know for a year before moving away to start my life, but I didn’t think that I would be so sad when it was over.
I’m excited to see what you accomplish over the next four years. I guarantee I’ll be back to visit at some point.
Just promise me one thing: remember how it felt to be that little freshman walking into the big school for the first time. Don’t forget how nervous you were and don’t forget how scared you were to be starting this roller coaster ride that we call high school.
Don’t forget what it was like for someone to help you out and show you where to go as you navigated where you’d be for the next four years.
Don't forget how relieved you probably were that you had an “in” with the intimidating upperclassmen.
Most of all, please pass on the favor. High school isn’t easy for anyone, but it’s nice to know that someone benefited from the work I put in.
Sincerely,
The senior who will miss you but can’t wait to leave
