I know the feeling. It's almost Christmas, but something just doesn't seem right. The gifts are under the tree, all the decorations are out. The holiday season is in full swing, but for some reason you're not in the Christmas spirit yet. But you don't want to spend a ton of money on a show or a Christmas lights exhibit. From one thrifty gal to another, here are 6 festive activities that are sure to get you in the mood for December 25.
1. Watch Christmas movies and make hot chocolate
Put on your coziest fuzzy socks and your warmest flannel PJs, pour some hot chocolate in your most festive mug and put on your favorite holiday film. Instant perfect night.
2. Drive around the neighborhood and look at Christmas lights.
The fancier the neighborhood, the better.
3. Window shop at your go-to mall or boutique.
Stores and malls are decorated so beautifully this time of year, and I personally love to spend time walking through all my favorite local stores downtown just to look at their displays.
4. Bake your favorite holiday treat.
Nothing feels more like Christmas than icing sugar cookies or baking a cake! Find your favorite recipe and get cooking! You can even pretend there is snow falling outside.
5. Do anything involving Christmas music.
I know caroling might be somewhat of a lost art, but there are still plenty of ways to spread Christmas cheer. Blast your favorite classics in the car with the windows down, or go door to door in your neighborhood if you’re feeling extremely jolly.
6. Spend time with family.
I know this one is cheesy, but there are few things in life better than some good old family time. Especially for college students home for the holidays, you get to spend a whole month around family and friends you don’t normally get to see, so take advantage! It will make their day, and yours too.
7. Look for Christmas events locally.
In my small hometown alone they have a Christmas parade of lights, fake snow in a downtown park, and even a public showing of Polar Express. Check to see what fun and free events are in your area, and don’t be afraid to try something new or outside of your comfort zone!!
8. Remember the reason for the season.
Sometimes, in the midst of all the craziness that comes along with Christmas, it's easy to forget what we're even celebrating. It can be so peaceful and fulfilling to turn off the lights and the distractions and just focus on the real meaning of it all. (I wrote an article just on this topic, check it out here!) Taking a break from the holidays can even help get you more excited about them.
Christmas doesn't have to be a huge, expensive spectacle. I encourage each and every one of you to try one or all of these, and watch your Christmas spirits be lifted. Merry Christmas, y'all!
