Dating is awesome. You get to hang out with someone you like a lot -- typically while doing something fun. Date nights, especially in Charleston, S.C. and on a college student’s budget, can get a bit pricey. However, one of the greatest things about Charleston is that there is no shortage of interesting things to do. And, surprisingly, many of these activities are free. Here are five free fun-night-for-two ideas you can find in Charleston, S.C.
1. Go on a beach walk
There are three beautiful beaches in Charleston and each has its own unique qualities. Folly Beach is just minutes from downtown and has a laid back, classic beach vibe. The locals are super friendly and the beaches are wide -- perfect for a romantic walk. If you’re willing to drive a little bit further and venture into Mt. Pleasant, Isle of Palms and Sullivan’s Island are also great places to visit.
2. Explore the Charleston City Market
There is no better way to experience the deeply rooted culture of Charleston than to walk through the market. From the iconic sweetgrass baskets to handmade soaps, there are so many things to look at; you won't be bored! Stopping to talk to the vendors about their craft also guarantees some interesting stories, as most of them have a great deal of history behind their businesses. This is definitely one of my personal favorite free activities and, who knows? Maybe bae will get you a present while you’re there.
3. Walk White Point Gardens
One of the most breathtaking places to take a stroll in Charleston is "The Battery." A walk around this historic waterfront park will allow you to view the great mansions of Charleston and, glancing into the harbor, you will be able to see Fort Moultrie, Fort Sumter and the Sullivan’s Island lighthouse. Venture into the park and get close to history by seeing real cannons from the Civil War. The park is filled with massive, ancient oaks that add classic character and a romantic feel. It's a perfect choice for date night.
4. Visit the Memorial Waterfront Park
This park located under the Arthur Ravenel Bridge is absolutely great for a casual but romantic evening. At night, the park is lit with soft lights and the long, elegant pier looks stunning against the night sky. There are bench swings placed sporadically down the length of the pier and serve as the perfect place to sit and view the city lights on the harbor. Not to mention, with proper timing, you could catch one of our world-famous Charleston sunsets.
5. Take a detour to the Morris Island Lighthouse
This lighthouse was built in 1876 and has withstood storms and civil war battles. All the while, it has guided incoming ships to the Charleston harbor. It is a pretty decent walk to get out to the lighthouse, but it is well worth it. The views from out there are absolutely magnificent and, on the walk there, you can encounter beach wildlife as well as watch people fish.
Date night does not have to break the bank. It really just comes down to spending quality time with someone you care about. Try out one of these date nights and get out into the number one city in the United States and the world (according to Travel + Leisure).
