1. Have an economic plan for middle and lower-class Americans.
This is one area where the Clinton campaign failed. They were trying to piggy-back off the success of the Obama administration, but there was only real growth in metropolitan areas. There was no economic plan for middle-class Americans in rural areas of the country. Most Americans are worried about how to put food on the table. Whether it is a young person saddled with student debt or an elderly woman on Medicare who has to decide between groceries or her blood pressure prescription. Bill Clinton's slogan in 1992 was, "It's the economy, Stupid." And it still rings true to this day.
2. Don't think of the next Presidential race.
Democrats need to focus on the midterms right now. They need to put all of their resources into races that are winnable, almost winnable, and the ones that they think are a shot in the dark. If the election taught us anything it's that nothing is for certain. On election day, Hillary had a 90% chance of becoming president. Expect the unexpected and help small town Democrats pick up some districts.
3. Stop the name calling.
Labeling all Trump voters as racist, misogynistic deplorables is not the way to win their votes. Some Trump voters actually voted for Obama in 2008 and 2009. Most of these voters voted for Trump because they were upset about the economy and healthcare. They have a reason to be angry.
4. Play dirty.
Dems have got to put on their gloves and go toe to toe with Republicans. They've been playing dirty for the past 8 years. Blocking Obama's legislation, vowing not to re-elect Obama (even though they failed, you can't say they didn't try). Dems having been playing too nice and that is exactly why we are in the minority. Go after these Republicans that don't think they have to give townhall meetings. Show them we are not backing down from this fight.
5. Unite the party.
Democrats are still fiercely divided between center left and far left politics. We've got to do some damage control if we are going to have any chance of winning in 2018. Find ways to compromise with your party members. We've already seen the Republicans have no chance of doing this. They can't even pass one single piece of major legislation. Come up with a platform that will unite the far left and the center left.
The 2018 midterm elections are sneaking up. Democrats have a lot of momentum since the Republicans elected an incompetent president, but we cannot let our guard down for a second. Volunteer for a local race, donate when you can trust me they will take what they can get and it goes a long way. Support your local democrats and get out and vote. The best way to resist is to change what is happening in politics. We all have the power to do that.
